I too broke down and got this! I was very lucky that amiami happened to have a very short-lived restock last week and I was able to order it while it was listed as "back-ordered". I think the backordered status lasted for half a day or so because the very next day it was listed as sold out. Anyways, I got the "your order is ready" email a day later, and have been playing with my SDF-1 the past couple days. So Niko, keep checking amiami or HLJ, you never know if more come in.
I finally managed to put all the screw covers and other tiny parts on last night, and it's magnificent! I am still debating whether to panel-line this thing. I think I will but I'm a little chicken about it due to its high price.
The details are amazing, the transformation smooth, with great QC and no problems. I love how it looks in both mode, but have to say it's more impressive in attacker mode. The pictures don't do it justice because it doesn't show the details. I think panel lining it would make it look even better. I like the stand too, it's sturdy and connects well to the SDF-1, and it even allow you to angle it up in attacked mode. Haven't taken any pictures yet though.

Yes, definitely my TOTY.
I know that HLJ is still taking order even though their stock status says "back ordered", but the Amiami price is still a little bit better than HLJ (plus, for some reason, they seem to ship a lot quicker than HLJ).
I really "hate" this, whenever I decide to concentrate in purchasing "chogokin" figures, things like this comes out once in a while and throws me off the track! But I get the feeling that I miss this, there will not be any chance in getting it in the future and I would have to eat the extravagant secondary market prices .
I will make my move once my house moving is confirmed at the end of next month, hopefully the larger retailers will have this back in stock again.

Yup. The main frame is metal, If I remember correctly. From what I read/see in the reviews, Yamato places metal parts in the correct places which supports the transformation properly.
Mine has not give any problem... yet. I managed to scratch the white paint on the metal chest part for being impatient and forcing the leg sockets to lock

To be fair, the problem metal pins in the early V2 VF-1 was a mistake that was corrected (and although Yamato never admitted it was a bad decision on their part, they did change for later releases). Yup... they changed from metal pins to... a different metal pin.
"Apparently the SDF-1 is so awsome it couldn't be contained to winning just one category of voting. You the readers not only voted it best Macross/Robotech toy of the year it also took Best High End and the Best of the best, Toy of the Year 2010. WE found the fit, finish, quality of materials and painstaking detail to be well worth the price tag and apprantly fans and collectors around the world agree as Yamato sold out of all of its stock of this $330 toy within days of being released."
The price for the SDF-1 kit has been announced, 16,590 yen. Source http://hk.rd.yahoo.com/blog/mod/art_title/*http://hk.myblog.yahoo.com/iam-cybergundam/article?mid=72584"]HERE[/URL].
I would like to buy it, but with the Fewture Shin Getter, SOC Daltanious, SOC God Sigma, and various SRCs and other stuff in pre-order coming up for release soon, I really shouldn't push my wallet...
