 Daimos Editions?
« Thread Started on Apr 25, 2012, 4:02pm »

Anyone ever heard of there being 2 different Mattel versions of Daimos?
Specifically I came across an issue with 2 different size leg missiles, one has a shorter tail section then the other.
Maybe they changed the size of the launcher and missiles at some point?
Thanks in advance for your help.

never heard of that. shoguns pretty much died out in the US after daimos was released. he was kind of DOA for the market, i dont think there was enough time for another to come out and ive never heard of any size variations, unless youre looking at a bootleg. the bootlegs looked like they were painted with anti freeze and LSD and are slightly smaller.

Maybe the 1st releases had the shooters from Popy Daimos? I've never heard of variants for this one. For reasons mentioned above.

there are some funny variants of the US daimos., but that doesnt really mean it is necessarily a different edition. i have several of the US version, and some have holes drilled in the chest, lower legs, and right hand. i was thinking they must have been made using the japanese edition molds early on, as the holes would work in tandem with the extra accessories and weapons for the japanese version. the chest has an actual three dimensional piece of that shape that mounts instead of the yellow dork wave sticker (yes, i called it a dork wave for lack of a better term - it looks like a picture in a japanese instruction manual of what would happen if you submerged a set of speakers in water). but then i thought about them using a japanese mold for the early version of the toy and that didnt make sense because they are clearly from different molds. even though the chest is drilled, it reads MADE IN JAPAN on back and other mattel specific branding. the lower legs being drilled is a mystery to me, too, because the japanese version has three dimensional missiles shaped like the sticker that are stored there and can be removed to fit under extended arm cuffs not seen on the us version, and he had missile shooting mechanisms on the upper legs, and on the mattel version you get tapered red plastic, so again, it obviously came out of a mattel mold. some us daimos right hands i have are drilled, others arent. thats because they are using a universal fist among many of the characters and simply swapped cuffs. us daimos is a weird one and proof of mattels heavy handed approach to modifying japanese designs. now that i am checking my missiles, you are right. i have one set that is longer at the base than other ones. since these are blow molded, im willing to bet that one of popy's machines was cutting too long for a while. popy was usually strict on QC, but with all these other anomalies, it may show that popy treated the mattel line as though it was second rate. the mattel jumbos are certainly inferior to the popy editions when it comes to their paint jobs. most likely, popy simply didnt give a damn about QC anymore for that line after mattel canceled it.

Glad to hear that you have 2 different sizes for the Daimos missiles. I was begining to wonder if I was being bamboozaled.
One other thought i had was about the leg launchers. If the length of the stems that catch into the launcher are different, does the longer of your two missiles stick out past the end of the launcher? The ones I have sit flush when loaded. I made a pair for someone, and they actually stick out of the launcher about 1/4 of an inch. Her launcher measures 5.8 cm. or 2.28 inches.
Are your leg launchers the same length?
Thanks for your replies ;D
