Last week was tough for me. I saw three of my top twenty or so most wanted toys come to auction on three consecutive days. I couldn't go after all three hard, but I couldn't narrow it down to which I really wanted more, so I made moderate bids on all three. Well, as expected, I lost all three. Pretty tough, since they weren't that common. But fortunately, when I had given up all hope, I happened upon another item I truly coveted for a very reasonable price, and I jumped! Introducing the Daitarn Electromotive Giant set:
This thing is HUGE! Look at the ruler in the pic for scale - its over a foot WIDE!
Now the first thing you'll notice is that mine is actually a bootleg of the Clover one. Like the Taiwan Daitarn DX is almost identical (except for one accessory), I believe this KO is also almost identical to the real deal. This one is made in Korea by Goldwell:
You gotta love when there's typos right on the outside of the box itself! The box has the same graphics as the Clover one, and it shows the toy in robot form, jet form, and tank form.
Under the cover, the parts are laid out in a styrofoam tray:
Again, mentioning the sheer size of this thing, the legs themselves look massive. They alone are about six inches tall:
One leg is as big as my hand, and I've got very large hands (add obligatory organ joke here):
This toy is so large that the accessories are held together by screws rather than just glue or whatnot:
You just don't see that on too many toys!
Here's a shot of the completed robot:
And here is a loose one I previously had on my shelf (not even standing on his tank treads!) This one has no accessories at all, so an upgrade was definitely needed considering how much I love this toy. You can see how he towers over the Machinder version of him, and he is even taller than the Dancougar SOC with his guns! I forgot to check my loose version to see if its an actual Clover version so I can compare. Maybe I'll edit this later, if I can make my way into my closet close enough to see.
As mentioned, he is made in Korea. Here's the trademark:
Here's a couple of close-up shots. His chest opens to reveal a chromed interior, but unlike the diecast version (BTW, this is all plastic), his head does not rotate down into his chest. You just have to remove it.
He has a really nice gem on the crest on top of his head:
The stickers (4 sheets) are unapplied on mine, and they came stapled together (not sure if this is how it came from the manufacturer, or the previous owner just did that so as not to lose any):
The instructions themselves are large:
Here's some close-ups to show the various transformations. Love the QA/QC (the jet is called the tank mode, and vice versa):
If you haven't already figured out from the name or the previous photos, this thing is battery operated. It works via a series of rotating gears. Here's some in the base and a connector, so you can see how the two gears hook up:
Therefore, you can see that the tank tread rotates, as do various other parts depending on how you hook it up. Additional rotating parts include the bottom of the feet and the waist (hidden below his silver crotch part):
As can be seen in the instructions above, there are many different configurations that can be made, and the combinations are only limited by your imagination (and a complex calculation based on the number of parts and what parts can actually join with what parts). One of the standard modes is the "Drill-Weaponed Daitarn III". In this mode, the drill in his belly rotates, as does the tank treads:
Another classic setup is the jet (or "Fighter") mode. This includes a firing mechanism on top.
The last major form is the tank. As you can see in the photos, you replace the fists with missiles, and they can fire, of course.
This photo shows the connectors to hold the legs onto the torso in this form. These connectors include the gears so the rotating function is transfered to the legs.
There are other derivations of the tank form. Here is one with the missile-firing mechanism on top:
And here is another version of the tank form:
So again, you can really set this up however you like. And because of the gears and connections, when you have it in the various vehicle forms, whatever you put in the base of the feet (like the drills) will rotate as it moves along the floor. It even has forward and reverse functions!
In summary, this is a versatile, HUGE (its seems even bigger in person than in the photos, if that's possible), amazing toy. Highly recommended!
