The MP04 Prime « Thread Started on Oct 10, 2006, 4:03am »
Hi guys, I thought I'd share a few images of the The Transformers Masterpiece 04 "Perfect Prime", for those who are curious about this toy.
Comparison with the Justtoys customized MP trailer that was released last year. Taraka's trailer on the left. Justtoys on the right. The Justtoys is version is a bit longer and is a bit higher(due to the chasis being a bit higher). Also, no diecast parts on either one(unless you count the screws and the metal rods )

Tailgates(the ramp is a seperate piece from the door).
Roofs
Front
Optimus Prime A slight change with the Mp04 Prime is that his wrist communicators now have Megatron and Grimlock instead of Starscream and Bumblebee.
A major disappointment is that Takara has really dropped the ball in terms of quality control, the MP04 has a lot of paint chips right out of the box, plus the window hinge on the left panel is bent so the chest area can't close properly, I checked another unit from where I got MP04 and it had even bigger paint scrapes on the chest area(near the matrix switch). The plastic pieces were badly removed from the frames back in the factory, there are lot of chips in the plastic parts from where the frame was cut.
The Smokestacks also had cuts into the plastic underneath the chrome paint and one of the tips of the stacks on mine is missing chrome application.
Even the trailer wasn't spared. Paint bleeds on the sides of the trailer appeared in one of the other units that I checked(better check both sides of the trailer if you want to get Mp04)
Battle mode
Service Bay mode. Prime's rifle, Axe and Megatron(gun mode) can be stored inside clamps along the sides.
As for which is better, I can't honestly say. It would've been nice if Takara had released the trailer solo and had a Roller to go with the MP04.
I personally prefer the outer appearance of the Justtoys, since it's got more detail in terms of color and on the Autobot logo.
On the other hand, the Takara trailer has the service bay, the legs that swing out to support the trailer sides(this was missing in the Justtoys, for me it made all the difference in terms of appearance) and more detail in the tailgate. The wheels also have internal springs to simulate "shock absorbers".
Plus the big box is really nice, it's the kind of thing you need a second to take in when you see it for the first time up front .
BTW MP01 and the trailer are packed individually inside white "shoeboxes" with secondary cardboard and inner plastic trays. Nice touch. Unlike Mp03, where the box crushes easily
Takara
Justtoys
I think if you have the Mp01 and the Justtoys trailer that would be good enough, but if you don't have either then its probably okay to get the Mp04(as long as you can check the toy for defects). The best so far would still be the THS-02 Convoy IMHO

Hey Gold!
Great review!
Dang, that's scary with all the paint chipping out of the box! I sold my MPOP a while back, so the release of the MP04 is a welcome note for me. I'm not much into TF's but Prime is a must.
I just hope that I don't get a lemon when I go out and buy an MP04.

Hehe, thanks guys, I wish I could compare it with the reissue Mp01 but I skipped that. I'm also curious about the Mp03 but I'll wait for Takara to make an anime accurate version(you just know they've got it all planned, if they can reissue MP Prime twice, then chances are they'll do the same to 'Screamer and the other seekers )

Awesome review.
I did notice bad QC on Prime himself....mostly paint/fingerprint issues. I have like 3 of them and each one has some sort of issue...particularly on the legs/shin area...
The frist MP-01 from Takara has the best paint...I think the blue was darker as well...The first Hasbro release was decent too!

Great review Gold, I think I prefer the Justtoys one too, I like the extra detailing plus it comes with a roller too. Just a quick question, when you open up the Justtoys version what's holding up the sides? Also what's the spaces at the front of the trailers, can you put the "gunpod" thing through it like the old G1 toy?

Thanks Dme3o, yeah I think majority of the released units have paint chips in the lower leg areas.
Watari, apart from the QC problems and new communicator pics, there is no difference in MP01 and MP04 Prime in terms of paint color or shade of plastic, even the blue legs (sorry if I confused anyone with the pics showing a lighter shade of blue, it's the lights ).
Thanks Chen Yes, the Gunpods can be mounted into the front of the MP04 Trailer through the slot, but you have to take "truck" Prime out of the way since the neck is too long and Prime will get in the way.
With regards to the Justtoys Trailer, uh, It doesn't have Roller either, and the sides don't open up (there aren't any hinges on the sides of the trailer to allow this), only the tailgate drops down. As for why are there holes in the Justtoys trailer roof and front hehe, no idea.
BTW, just to add, another thing I don't like about the MP04 is that unlike the MP01, the accessory tray that helps hold Prime in his tray is gone, the accessories are just now mounted on the sides of the newly designed Opti tray, so after you release Prime from the twist ties, he's going to shake around the box when you put him back in storage unless you tie him down again.
The accessory tray in the MP01 acted as an extra pad to hold Prime down even after you undo the twist ties.

ok, there is a just toys trailer which is not trasformable... after this there is a person who make a trailer trasformable with roller as the original trailer was, this traielr is sold in just toys'boxes... and than there is the takara MP4... and i think in the future the takara mp with only the trailer............
