OH by the way, I got to review one of those SD 12" Mazingers all you guys were talking smack about and yeah, its ugly but I still like it and I gave it a "thumbs up". By looking at the sculpt. I think SD was looking to make a "old school" figure like they had back in the day. Some of those old 60s and 70s Mazingers were every bit has nasty looking and if you really look closely at the real old Mazinger anime, youll see that the SD is a spitting image of the original... thats why I gave it a good rating. The build was super solid, the paint was ok. the box was real nice and the sculpt was every bit as crude and nasty as the old drawings of Mazinger used in the original anime. The only thing that threw me off was that the box art was very modern, I think people would have "got it" more if the drawings were kinda crude like in the original series. So, In my opinion if you want a "old school" type replica of a old Mazinger, TOY the SD gets that job done quite nicely..

Tom Mazinger came out in 1972 so there arent any 1960s Mazingers haha. But some look like they could be 60s toys.

LOL... Well I guess it's good you liked it but to say it is a good figure... I can tell you straight up that SD Toys did not purposely try to make it look old school - they just sucked in their attempt to make a Mazinger figure. IMO, the SD Mazinger is an absolute piece of junk. You are correct thou, they did make it exactly the same way as the 70's cheap PVC toys... just as crappy. I have several old Mazinger figures and none of them look like the SD. They are a lot better made. Hell, even a couple of Chinese bootleg Mazinger and Great Mazinger figures I bought many years ago look way better - and those two are absolute crap. The only thing I can compare the SD Mazinger to is those cake decoration figure you'll find in bakery shops that make birthday cakes - only bigger. }D

I havent watched that whole series yet, just about 10 episodes..

Id buy it just to have it, I liked the fact that it was ugly. ha ha

I'm not telling anyone not to go ahead and buy it. I'm just giving folks a heads up that to me, the biggest Mazinger Z fan ever, it was a piece of junk. So much that I got rid of it... and says a lot. }D

I saw some owners pictures of that figure and it does look weird, but not as bad as those pictures that gettershadow posted. It looks more like a home made garage figure than something a machine would mass produce.

I wouldnt compare it to a high-end vinyl. When I looked it at I got the impression it was supposed to look like a vintage vinyl. I guess it just depends on how you look at the thing. To me it just looked "old school" like the vintage toys. It was pretty crude but for some reason, I liked it. Some guys are saying that SD got that look by accident but they got another Super Deformed SD Grendizer vinyl statue that looks real good, so I was thinking that SD had the skill to get whatever "look" they wanted, unless SD just buys figures made by various sculptors with random skill levels. Have you seen the SD "Baby Grendizer"? Its real good, no articulation though, just a statue.

I think they buy from different sculptors then because like on the mazinger, I could even see where the prototype clay legs where rolled, like the contours where not a smooth line but more like when you roll some clay by hand. It looked like an amateur job a lot. Look at this picture to better see what I mean:

TheMazingerZ, what do you think of this HLPro Grendy? I love it!.. the price is high though. Im probably gonna get it anyway just becuase its HL PRO. That box in person is excellent too...thats a big part of why Im gonna get it. The box is a cut above what I would expect in a vinyl of that size. Paint app is real good too..

I think that a company that made the Grendizer statue could do a lot better with a Mazinger figure. After seeing the pictures, I have to agree with TMZ that it is bad and I will not buy it.

If you are talking about the 9" Gredizer review that I just posted, that is a different company, that was HL PRO.. I was talking about ANOTHER Grendizer in that display case made by SD, I will go review that SD Grendizer today.. its a nearly perfect "Baby Grendizer", so I am under the impression that SD can get any look they want. So, for now Im gonna say that the SSD Mazinger was done that way on purpose, the Pilder in the head was executed very well.. hinges on the wings and everything. The biceps and forearms on the Z were strangely angled, the body and neck are kind of elongated, to me it looks like it was done on purpose...but maybe that is just me. Its also SUPER HEAVY, I thought it was cool in a funky way, oh well.. each to his own. ha
