These are the mech games that I liked to play, whether on a PC or a game console:
Kikaioh / Tech Romancer (Capcom): like what Gold and the other guys say, this game just rocks! The characters are ripoffs of mechs from other series, but with enough uniqueness to make me want a toy rendition of them. There are ripoffs of Mazinger (the key character - Kikaioh), Gundam, Getter Robo (only has two components, but it has two forms depending which vehicle is on top), Macross valkyris (three way transformation) and others. I played this game using emulation and it played really well without any noticable bugs / crashes.
Cyber Troopers Virtual On (SEGA) - A head on fighting / shooting game. The mech number is a little bit limited, but they are varied enough to be enjoyed, and each character will require a different strategy to win. There are types that excels in long range combat (raiden and belgdor), while other excels in short range combat (apharmd). The lead mech, temjin is more well rounded while there are also others that relied in speed such as Fei-Yen and Viper and one that has real unique attack - can't remember the name, it's the hovering one. Since I played the PC version, the control scheme is dumbed down from the original 2 sticks control of the arcade version.
Armored Core Series (From Software) - A mission based mech game that follows the storyline of earth being controlled by corporations in the future and you can become of the corporations mercenary, and fulfilling various mission for your corporation. This game has a very in depth customization, which will allow you to build any specilized mech to your heart content. The control system is also very cumbersome before they introduced support for the analog control system. I have nexus, nine balls and last raven for the PS2, but only play through nexus to the end. Control system may be to complicated for the casual gamer / weekend rentals.
Virtual On Mars (SEGA). Instead of a head on fighting game like its predecessor, Virtual On Mars has storyline missions like the Armored Core series. However, the missions are not varied enough and is a little boring. Mech graphics are OK, but the background is a little bland. Didn't play through the end of this version, tho. For the PS2.
Gundam Battle Assault 1 / 2 / 3 (BANDAI). A decent fighting game featuring Gundam from various continuity, this one is bit simple, but quite fun. 1 & 2 are played on a 2D axis, while 3 features full 3D movement. Also, 3 follows the story of Gundam Seed's continuity while 1 and 2 has random storyline, although there are character specific storyline in 2. There's a lot of mechs to unlock in 2 and 3, but only a miniscule number in one. In fact I became a fan the of Sazabi while playing GBA 1. GBA 1 & 2 is for the PS1, while 3 is for the PS2.
Another Century's Episode series (Banpresto). Like Otaru said, this is a shooting game where you can pilot many different real robots from Gundam and other series like Macross, Nadesico, Brain Powerd, Layzner, Dragonar and others. Language barrier prevented me from enjoying this game too much, since it's only available in Japanese. For the PS2.
Super Robot Taisen/Wars Series (Banpresto): Tactical / Strategy RPG featuring many, MANY robots from lots of classic and new shows, including a roster of original robots designed by famous mecha designer such as Hajime Katoki and Kazutaka Miyatake. Since its introduction in 1993, the series has span many platforms from SNES, N64, Dreamcast, Nintendo Game Boy, PS1 and PS2. Super Robot Wars Original Generation 1 & 2 is available for the Game Boy, although it only feature original robots. All other versions are in Japanese, with the newest installation being Super Robot Wars Z to be released in November 2008. Myself has only played SRW Alpha 3 (not finished) and SRW Original Generations (completed) for the PS2, and despite its language barrier, has really enjoyed the game.
Front Mission Series (Square Enix): Another Tactical / Strategy RPG featured in full 3D graphics, contrary to the SRW series which uses anime styled graphics for battle. This game also offers a lot of customization, world scale conflict and very deep storyline that will keep you guessing (plus the in game cut scene is excellent, typical of Square - Enix FMV). I played FM III for the PS1 and FM IV for the PS2. There's also a FM V out for the PS2, but it was not localized. A team in Gamefaqs.com is now developing a translation for this game if you are interested, but it's not yet complete.
Gundam Games:
The games that I have played is Gundam Seed Never Ending Tomorrow (Bandai) for the PS2. It's a mission based shooter with a lot of mission to unlock, anc it closely follows the Seed storyline from the eyes of its two main characters, Kira Yamato and Athrun Zala. After finishing the main missions, player can play unlocked mission with special character from the Seed msv series.
Next one is the Gundam VS Zeta Gundam (CAPCOM), it's a head on fighting / shooting game like the virtual on series, but instead of fighting one on one, you can have a partner join you and have more than one enemies on the screen. Played for the PS2, this game has A LOT of missions for each characters and spans the One Year War and Zeta Gundam, told from the point of view of each faction (Federation, Zeon, AEUG, Titans, and Neo Zion).
Then there's the game Gundam: Encounters in Space (BANDAI) for the PS2. It's a mission based shooting game similar to Gundam Seed never ending tomorrow, set in the timeline of Gundam 0083. I haven't played much of this one tho...
Whew - didn't realize that there are so much mech game out there...
