I have to face the facts, I do not have the time to build models, ever. No matter how cool they are, no matter how bad I want to, there is no way to fit them into my schedule. This seriously bums me out for some of the great stuff Kotobukiya puts out, but I have to come to terms that it is a waste of time for me to buy models because they never get built. I still have the SRW Wildraubtier sitting half finished in its box waiting for me to finish. I have three or four models that have never been touched. In the back of my mind I always think that sooner or later there will be time for these to be built. This is not going to happen and I just have to face it. So perhaps my model building days are officially done.
Anyone else had to face this fact?

Don't feel so bad. And, Don't get rid of your kits whether they're built or not. Someday you might feel the bite and just spontaneously start building (or Finishing) your kits and you'll feel better once they start looking awesome from all the work you put into them. Up to now I've been so lazy to start on my MechaColle super-robot kits. Once I started, I got addicted to it; plus I have a little more free time while I'm still unemployed- so, the kits take my mind off of the stress. It took me three years before I decided to start assembling my MechaCollection Mazinger-Z kit; and it's taken me now three weeks to get as far as I've come with all the custom detail work I'm doing to it. I'm still not finished with it yet; but so far it's exceeding my expectations better than what I envisioned. I'll post pics of it in the FanArt/Custom thread as soon as the job is completed. I guess I'm hooked onto these particular kits (the Bandai MechaCollection super-robot kits), because now I wanna build all the other kits in this toyline; plus, I wanna make custom enemy robots from the Mazinger kits to go with Mazinger-Z. After I'm done assembling/painting Mazinger-Z, I'll move on to start work on Raideen. I assume that some kits are more appealing to build than others. If I'm into Super-robot model kits, I wouldn't start working on a Camaro car model kit, because I'm not into cars... If a Battleship model kit catches my interest, I'll buy just one battleship kit and build it to completion before I decide on getting any more kits in that genre. I take it just one kit at a time. In the case of the MechaColles, I bought two kits to start with. It just depends on what toy stuff you're into at the time.

I have a laundry list of unbuilt models, plastic and resin On occasion I consider that I really should work on them (some of them were darned expensive, too >.< ), but I never seem to have the time or the willpower ...

I sold most of my gunpla and resin kits a few months ago, all I have left is my PG Strike. Somehow I don't feel the satisfaction of building them anymore, and they're just hogging up precious space. MG Unicorn was the last kit I built, and somehow I just wanna get it done and over with. Even when I completed it, I compared the bare plastic finish to the GFFMC version, I somehow felt that I should have gotten that, and my time could be better spent doing something else instead. We're so spoilt for choice nowadays that I'm pretty sure anything you want in kit form, you can get a similar completed version down the road. Even Zoids and Armored Core, which I thought will never go beyond model kits, are seeing some non-kit figures in the near future. I'm still crossing my fingers for an SoC-like White Glint. Plus, working 50-60 hour work weeks doesn't help either. ;D

That's what I'm really hoping is for Armored Core and the best Zoids getting made into figures someday. I kind of wish Kotobukiya would pick up on doing the AC figures again like way back when. Some people have complaints about those figures, but I would take them over models any day, and Kotobukiya has become such a bigger company compared to back then that I'm sure they would have some improvement on joints and articulation. In fact the recent figures Kotobukiya put out for the Lost Planet video game were top notch in quality, with ratcheted joints and excellent balance and posability. Now if they would only do that with AC!!!

Even if they aren't - it seems there's a future for Armored Core toys.

This thread is sort of a sad reminder to me that I have a serious, SERIOUS backlog problem. The GKs and plamo have been proliferating for many years. Lack of time and my 40plus hr/week job is probably getting in the way, but I need that job to pay bills, eat and, well, buy more models and toys. My workshop... That's only a small portion of my kit stash! Of late, It takes a real act of time and ambition to haul my arse into the workshop to build and paint. I LOVE it though. I'd have to be held at weapon point for me to give it up! Between all the super cool toys/figures being released and my plamo addiction its a really tough situation. Scale modeling is like my wife while the toys and pre-built mechs are my mistress. Comics and CCGs and video games don't help the matter either. Friends and family always come first so that's just something that I'll never shake off. I totally get where everyone is coming from though. I suppose, it's just something I have to live with. I know I can't devote as much time as I'd like to building kits, but I can't get over that feeling of pride and accomplishment after clear-coating a freshly painted kit. I think that's what keeps me going.

Starting is definitely the hard part. Once I do, I usually am pretty dedicated. But just breaking the ice...

I haven't completely given up on modeling though. I still have my hobby supplies, and in the rare event that I find the time and motivation to pick up the brush again I'll hunker down on some TF movie figures. Painting TF movie figs is a lot more enjoyable for me, there's less parts to deal with, maximum effect can be achieved with minimal effort and best of all, if I mess up a little, which I do a lot, it still turns out great.
So I guess you don't have to completely give them up, be a little more selective in what you choose to build. Unless you're kind of going for an all-or-nothing over here.

Dude, I envy you... N V U!!! I seriously love your workshop setup there. I wish I had room for a setup with that kind of gear. That setup there looks equipped for you to even make your own bash parts. What's that machine there with the silver hose? Is it a grinding booth? Or a paint booth? or Both? Looks like the hose gets put out that window to blow away the dust and fumes from your work. Really Nice! I have to agree with you about Time management. Family, and Work, are two top priorities that take precedence over everything else. After paying bills and expenses, there's always chump-change leftover to pay for this hobby; And at least there's also always time to chill out and work on your kits. If I had a job right now, I wouldn't have as much free time to devote to my hobby-- but at least I'd have some free time for it; and more money to spend on supplies and toy specimens. I'm single; and I live rent-free in exchange for labor, and landscaping work out of town on weekends. My two housemates are disabled, so I do most of the yard work at home and at their other house in Vermont (Halifax) out in the woods. (I get a little money "under the table" for any excessive work done out in the woods or work done beyond my scope of trades)... that means I have more free time during the week to get a part-time job and save money; and still have time leftover to work on my hobbies. I'm almost done working on my Mechacolle Mazinger kit. The robot itself is done, but I'm tempted to touch it up further since the work done on it exceeded my expectations. Now I'm getting ready to paint its Jet Scrander. I'm addicted to it... I don't wanna stop until I get it "perfect" or "beyond perfect" as possible. I really love my MechaColle kits! ;D zozo-Magengar This thread is sort of a sad reminder to me that I have a serious, SERIOUS backlog problem. I figured I would just start building model kits when I've retired. That way, I'll have all time in the world and hopefully a big enough house to display my work.
Hope my eyesight and dexterity are still good when the time comes! ;D

Think of it as "Riding a Bike"... once ya learn, ya don't forget. ;D I'm growing more fond of Gundam kits. I already have two, but they were already built-- bought from RJers here. So I study them to see how they were worked on, and that inspires me to try new ideas when I'm ready to build my own kit from the sprues. The thing that fascinates me about kit building is the attention to detail put into it. There are so many techniques to learn for adding detail and textures, too. That's the part I like best. There's some basic rules; and after that you're pretty much on your own to do whatever you want to finalize the project. In the end, it's something that's Uniquely Yours, and no one else on Earth has it but You. zozo-Magengar

Speak of the devil, I've broken an ages long hiatus to pull out one of my Kotobukiya SRW model kits and build it today . Kotobukiya has kind of been my model kit saviour recently. With their D-style kits, SRW:OG kits, and the fantastic Rockman kits, they've been managing to supply me with easy to build kits that look amazing without too much detailing effort (some minor paint touch-ups and clear coating at most is what I have time and willpower for nowadays). Spending an evening with a glass of wine and an exacto knife is a great way to beat the winter blues Kotobukiya is definitely my darling when it comes to model kits. Bandai just isn't making anything of interest to me nowadays.

It's a matter of priorities. 2 months ago, I would be like you and say that I do not have time to build. But the last three weeks, I've built 3 GM HGUC's and a fourth one is on the styro, primed, drying waiting for some airbrush work. I plan to build at least another two MG's and at least 4 more HGUC's in the next two months or so. It is therapuetic for me, some have their rock gardens, I have gunpla. Sorry, fuzzy iphone pics...too lazy to bust out the gear. When I'm done with the squad, I'll do a proper photo session.
