i noticed what it is, it is the strip of plastic between Voltrons cheek and the jaw of the lion it makes the face look funny because it is molded in the same color i think if it was not there at all or painted in a darker color it would look much better very cheap 6 second microsoft paint fix I don't think that is what it is. His face looks fat and flat. I compared it to both my vintage and Toynami Voltron and the face looks all wrong. Comparing to a photo from the anime it just looks all wrong. The Green Lion looks wrong to me too. Sigh

I really don't see the problem with this face. The face on the Toynami Masterpiece Voltron was too skinny, and the face on the Godaikin Golion is too wide compared to the anime version. I do agree that the face on the Blazing Sword Voltron looks the closest to the anime Voltron, but that is because the entire figure does!

Not sure I agree with you the Blazing Sword one being closest either. Toynami one looks closest. This one sure does not look like this: Or this And ESPECIALLY THIS! It is a pity really. Mattel always has a chance to do awesome...and fails. The Blazing Sword Voltron is a great toy but I let my 3-year old daughter play with it as it lacks the awesome factor I expect in today's day and age.

To me this Voltron looks like he has been eating at McDonald's for the last 30 Days, got punched in the face a bunch by a Robeast, or worse...both!

The arms look too big in proportion to the body and the legs. With regards to the head, WHERE IS THE NECK? The teeth on the lower jaw of the Black Lion should be hidden...

I don't recall the Voltron in the anime having the legs of the lions showing at all. Yes, the Blazing Sword Voltron is the closest to the anime there is, besides the vinyl 24" jumbo and 9" figures. }D

I saw the completed Voltron on display at SDCC. This thing was huge! Did not like the overall quality of the plastic used. Seemed kinda cheap. Sorta like the plastic on the Weaponizer Bumblebee if any of you have seen that.

It should be made of the same plastic as all of the other lions, right? It is basically a somewaht thicker "Gundam model/toy" quality plastic. }D

Got my blue lion set yesterday. I'm happy to report that Princess Allura's knee joints bend almost 90 degrees towards the back and has almost no forward bending motion. They finally fixed something.
Man there sure is a lot of hate and complaints on this figure. My share has to do mostly with customer service. Now that I have everything resolved with DR I'm a much happier buyer.
despite all the shortcomings, this Voltron deserves some love.

This was the fastest shipping one so far. 2 days after release. Not the usual week. And I live in SoCal so it never should have taken a week. Some things are getting better at Matty.

Unless you got in on the "subscription" for it you are not going to get it unless you pay stooopid money in the aftermarket. With the QC issues the cost has not been worth it. Does not appear much attention detail was done. That and the face sculpt just seems odd. So flat faced. Sometimes BIGGER is NOT better.

Sounds like sour grape to me.
I got the subscription service, and had QC issue on my red lion, which Mattel replaced for me. The subsequent lions were fine. even without the subscription it is entirely possible to buy the lions at MSRP, it just requires you to sit in front of the computer five mornings. It's not like Matty don't tell you exactly when these things are available to order (unlike the recent impossible to preorder Bandai Macross frontier Valkyries).
I have spent a lot more money on other stuff that gets me less than this 2 Ft Voltron that transforms and come with pilots and two big ass swords. I'm not as picky as some on sculpt, and have not seen the black lion and combined mode in person. But if I overlook the horrible customer service and just look at the four lions I've got so far, I'm pretty happy. it brings back nostalgia.
I'm not sure why people keep complaining about price. We are in an expensive hobby and all of us have been ripped off in one way or another. When people pay $300 for a new jumbo storm trooper or Mazinger that comes with minimal features and articulation, a $375 ($290 before tax and shipping) transforming Voltron with pilots sound like a screaming deal to me . The after market prices tend to agree with me. If you are just starting out collecting after the first few lions have shipped, I feel for you that you have to pay the high prices. But then all popular items tend to get expensive after first release and it shouldn't be a reason to hate the toy.
Bigger may not be better, but nothing replace the wow factor of size. At the end of the day Matty Voltron owners will be the only ones to say that they've got a relatively anime accurate jumbo sized Voltron that transforms that comes with pilots. I don't think that a similar toy will ever ever be done again.
Love it for its size, love it for the pilots, love it for its articulation (compared to any other toys at this size), and love it for its one-of-a-kindness.

And, unless Mattel re-releases it as a complete set, or even as separate lions later on, it will be most likely give a new meaning to the word "EXPENSIVE" in the aftermarket. }D
