I wonder if this becomes more popular and more perfected that they will have to crack-down on illegal toy downloads, like on Nabster with music. This is a big debate on how to regulate as many prints will become a copyright on likeness or originality deal. It is not like there are files out there for us to just easy copy and download from the original piece like music was. But, I don't expect Disney to allow people to print out any of their characters without permission, well, at least for re-sale or openly on the market. I like the idea of going in with a group of people, but would be easier if you had some friends with similar interests to do that. Some cities do have Maker Shops, but not in my own easy driving range.

That's a very good question. If I had one of these printers you can bet the first toys I'd make would be my very own renditions of Mazinger-Z. But, I wouldn't sell them; and I'd only make a few limited amounts of them for friends here at RJ, without publicizing it anywhere else. I wouldn't sell it, because of copyright legalities, and the Mazinger robot character and its toy franchise originally belongs to Go Nagai. So, with that in mind, I'd do it and label THAT particular hobby aspect as "Fancraft". If I were to make my own ORIGINAL robot toys, such as something I originally created from my DoGA-CGA animation program, and it were to become a hit with fans; then, yes, I'd probably follow it up with its very own toy merchandising to promote the character.... ...in similar marketing fashion as what FB Washington has done with his Robot God Akamatsu character. His character is unique and original, so he can do that. Just imagine how he'd be able to print out an actual Robot God Akamatsu toy with these 3D printers. zozo-mag

If i had this machine, i'd FINALLY have Mighty Orbots!! And some action figures that will never be made: MARVEL:Jack of Hearts, Stingray, Micronauts, and Rom DC:Dawnstar, Saturn Girl of 1980, Shadow Lass of 1980 ...oh, I would have tons of fun. There already IS a sight where you can download and upload designs. I stumbled on it, it had the downloads for sections of a castle you can build. I have to wonder, though: Would it be cheaper to build the castle out of LEGO? How much is this going to cost? well, i found a VIDEO using the castle oh, okay, here is the site: www.engadget.com/2012/01/18/makerbot-releases-free-to-download-playsets-will-have-you-print/I immediately thought: CASTLE GRAYSKULL!!! I bet I could make one cheaper than $300 on this machine. maybe. or...CASTLE OF LIONS!...well, the ideas can just flow and flow.

If you like the group idea, but don't have a group to round up, a possible alternative for anyone living near big cities would be to join a prototyping club. It's the same idea as joining a fitness club... you pay a monthly fee for access to the equipment. Typically this would include CNC, power tools, a vacuum form (for vinyl stuff), 3d printer and a ton of other stuff. I think one of the biggest benefits to places like this would be to learn a lot from the guys and the tools around you, but I have no idea how much the fees are.
