Recently saw the SH Figurarts Dragon Ball Super Broly figure, not the Full Power Legendary Super Saiyan Version but the one before he transforms and still has his Saiyan armor on. So, I went over to BBTS, to order the Full Power version, perhaps the head will be swappable in the future and I get the option of using the Full powered Legendary Super Saiyan head with the Saiyan Armor body. Anyway, after placing the order, I get this email from BBTS saying due to the new tax laws, starting April 1, they will have to collect sales taxes for California, Minnesota and Colorado. So living in California means you pay 10% more for your toy now, even if you buy out of state. This totally sucks. BBTS better offer free shipping or else I buying strictly from CA Retailers like Eknight Media because they offer free shipping over $150 orders.

I'm in Illinois where the same kind of Law went into effect years ago. It's not just BBTS; eventually Eknight, Amazon, and any other retailer who sells to your state is going to start doing it too.
Btw, with BBTS isn't shipping 4 bucks?

Since I live in Canada, from Day 1 I started collecting, I was never able to get free shipping, or low cost shipping. And now in Canada, digital things (like Netflix, games, etc.) are now taxed too.
So in a way, it's not bad for you now, but before you did have a better price than me.

errrr......shouldnt we discussing this in another forum? Honestly, I don't see this as any different than talking about a company having sales or coupons. Kind of fales under "e-tailer changes"... but yea it could probably go in general too.

Because local retailers were complaining that people would prefer to buy out of state to avoid paying taxes and end up paying cheaper thus loss of business for them... or government people want more money out of us as usual.

If possible, for imports anyway, I’ll always try to get them over seas. The thing is, there are way more collectors now days and so it’s harder to buy from over seas retailers like HLJ Amiami etc... for the popular stuff. So, when those preordered closed, the options is to purchase from domestic retailers. And yes, there are plentiful retailers from CA. And yes, I avoid them because I don’t like the 8-10% sales tax. But since this new tax law goes into effect today, there’s no more saving/advantage for buying out of state. So yes, it’s a win for CA online retailers cause I’m more likey to buy from EKnightmedia and Toyarena now since they offer free ship over $150 purchase and cause all other retailers in other states will charge the additional 8-10 tax anyway.

It’s strange to me to think this is wrong. Of course I always preferred avoiding the sales tax when I could, but it was always clear to me it was a loophole. If you live in a state with a sales tax, you ought to be paying that sales tax when you buy goods. As a California resident, I’m personally annoyed that I now have to pay it more often, but I can separate my personal desires from what makes sense legally. Legal tax dodging was fun while it lasted and I hope this does boost CA’s business. I know I’ll choose CA businesses over others if I’m paying the tax either way. Will be interesting to see if this takes a sizable chunk out of businesses like BBTS, leading them to lower prices to balance it out. CA is a big state and conducts a lot of business. I imagine the dent will be noticeable to several online retailers.

No one in CA is going to materially suffer because they have to pay sales tax on sh*t from amazon or toys from BBTS. My quality of life will not change, nor will my spending. This only benefits the state and the residents in the end. This is just the law catching up to technology.

In CA, you need to pay 'Use Tax' each year in the CA Tax Return anyway to cover out of state purchases, so while it seems no tax up front when buying stuff out of state, you have to pay an estimate amount for your whole year at the end...unless you cheated on your tax filing.

Didn’t want to spam the Vehicle Voltron thread but I just found out that the new tax law for online retail sales, it’s not enforce by all retailers. Select retailers seems to be doing this but not all. I just place an order for at ToyDojo, for a Amazing Yamaguchi Revoltech Gambit, a SH figuarts Gogeta and a IRon Factory Jazz, need to spend over $150 for the free shipping. Went to check out and was not charged sales tax. So there’s hope that maybe I can find another USA retailer, not BBtS and not in California to save $35-40 in taxes buying the Gx88 Voltron.
