GoDaiKin were pretty much the Cadillac of Robot toys in the pre-transformer days. Problem is, I don't really remember seeing them on store shelves as a kid.
so, what stores do you remember seeing them?

In Asia (HK and Macau specifically) where I am from, they were just sold in toy stores and the toy section of larger department stores, usually behind the counter on glass display cases, so they are out of reach from kids that can't afford them LOL, and can only have the parents ask for them if they are really buying the goods.

So True! I remember walking past shops that had Dairugger XV on display but it was always out of reach for me to ever touch it or it was behind a glass case just taunting and you in awe. I do miss those good old days in Asia when there would be literal hole in the wall toy stores that would carry random gokins and jumbos for sale... either hanging off the ceiling so kids can't reach them yet again or locked behind them glass cabinets.

I still remember fondly the day I bought my Takatoku GBP-1S Armor (armor only, no valk), after saving for quite a while off my allowance/snack money. It was a storefront display that has been in their big glass display facing the main street for a while. The clerk has to climb in and maneuver around to reach it. As an early teen, I was very proud to buy a premium item with my own savings, and lived in fear checking that glass display everyday I walked by make sure no one else bought it before me. Even though I lost that original set from decades ago moving to US, I do have a set now sitting in my cabinet. But it was no Takatoku Max 1J that is wearing it, but a Bandai reissued Hikaru 1J instead.

In Southern California, they were sold at local mom & pop toy stores such as Karl's Toys, Play Co and a store called Pony Toy Go Round in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. The only large retailer store I know that had sometimes carried Godaikins was Toys R Us. My hometown of Cerritos, California eventually became the Bandai America headquarters after they moved from Allendale, New Jersey. From the mid 1980's to the late 80's, replacement parts were readily available at the Bandai America warehouse pick-up location, and I remember seeing some boxed Godaikins (probably unsold overstock) even as late as early 1990. I remember obtaining a Space Warp rollercoaster set from a garage sale that was missing the track tubing. During the time, I was able to just call up Bandai customer service and I could purchase and pick up replacement parts at the warehouse pick-up location. And this is where I remember seeing some Godaikin stuff in the building. I was collecting comics at that time (late 80's/early 90's), and wish I could turn back time and could have collected MIB Godaikins instead.
Not many people remember this, but Disneyland (Anaheim) also carried Godaikins. I remember seeing them in the old Geppeto's Toy Store (now currently a candy store).

In New Orleans, Louisiana in the early '80s there was a toy store called Toys By Roy in one of the malls. They sold GoDaikins as well as other import toys such as Diaclone and Microman, as well as the usual Chogokin knock offs such as Lion Bot.

In Northern California they had them at small toy stores and comic book shops. In Napa where I grew up and still live we had a Toy Shop that carried them and they were also sold at Mervyn's and Montgomery Wards here. They would have large displays of them in the toy sections but they were very expensive and I never got one as a child. Have many now as an adult and the majority are brand new never out of the box!

Man, Mervyn's and Montgomery Ward's toy section? Who knew. The toy sections of big department stores has sure gone down hill big time through the decades.
