Have a feeling that this release is pretty much a cost saving release, with decent amount of reuse parts from GX-51 to minimize the cost, so happen it featured briefly in the very beginning of Arc (but of no story significance from what I can tell).

A filler it seems.
Unfortunate because 98 could have been so much more. 98 is such a cool sounding number. Getter Noir 1, D.C. Getter Dragon, D.C. Jeeg, Angoku DaiShogun, Pacific Rim Cherno, BossBorot….I can go on and on about what could have been a better GX98 then….D2…

Apparently there's D2s in the emperor armada but I never saw it. While I'm gladly going to buy it because I love the random getter variations, if we are talking pure relevance to the story and screen time, they should have released gettersaurus instead

Is it me or is it getting uglier? Sorry I can't get myself to like it. Honey-comb-face here and his variants has always been a weird robot for me. Add in the long fingernails and the more bat-like features and well, yeah.

Getter Robo D2 shows up briefly at the beginning only to get defeated just to show Arc strength What? for real? lol Maybe its like Getter dragon in Shin Getter Armageddon series Much less significant. Getter Dragon while being a grunt, has some very impactful scenes in Armageddon, and showed up a bunch of times, formed Shin Dragon, and later has the evil variant in episode 11 that has one of the best fight in the show. Not D2, not even close, unless the anime purposely added new scenes of it not existing in the manga, which is very possible. From the recent anime trailer, regular color Dragon and Shin 1 also made an appearance, which I believe never showed up in the manga. So there is likely added content in the anime, giving D2 more screen time. One saving grace of GX-98 is the GX-51 base. While being almost a decade old, GX-51 is pretty great. Very heavy, very solid, with any loose joints being easily fixed or a screw tighten up a bit. So GX-98 can't be that far off.

I can also can vouch for the quality of GX-51. The hip DOES come loose after few play BUT it can indeed screwed back to original tightness. ( but I still can’t fix the forward\backward loose hip movement….)
Swiss Army Knife cross screw fits PERFECTLY.

Does GX-51 Getter Dragon have any smelly plastics? If it doesn't I might hunt one down at some point. I really liked my GX-52 Getter 1, but eventually got rid of it because the PVC hands and cape smelled so strongly I couldn't stand the thing, save for when it was naked and handless. I remember it and GX-51 came out so close together that I assumed the hands on GX-51 might have the same problem.

Tiffer PLEASE don't tell me you HATE styrofoams too!
If you do,
“Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."
But to answer your question, I don't recall strong smell on GX Getter Dragon...and BELIEVE me. I have couple of figs without their hands and head for the EXACT reason.

Mine also seems to be fine. Was sealed unopened for many years until I opened it recently. Nothing out of the ordinary just like it was fresh off the factory, which is a testament of some of these older SOCs.

Ha! Sometimes I get rid of the styrofoam and just keep the accessories in an old model kit box. Other times I tolerate it because, aside from protection, it gives a piece an old-school feel, like with the High Complete Model reissues or SOC DaiRugger.
And thanks for the info guys! Sounds good.

Update: You got me go back and smell a bunch of fists LOL, and I do notice a rubber smell from GX-51 hands not presented in my other SOCs. It doesn't stink or not really strong, but when I hold it close to my nose and sniff, I smell it. Didn't expect that until you point it out. On the other hand, I noticed my SRC Mazinger Zero fists grew a thin layer old yellow 'mold' .

Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and find out for myself. Just as well, I'd be doing everyone a favor, as with my luck, the moment I get GX-51 is when Bandai announces a DC Getter Dragon. :)

I think a DC Dragon is different enough that it would be OK to double dip, as long as you love the Dragon. The kicker will be soon Bandai announce a GX-51R, which will base on the traditional/new Arc anime color scheme on a GX-51 Reissue. Now that would hurt.

Weird why GX-100 and GX-99 are released for PO before 98.
