Owners of the SOP Yamato- what do you think of it? Is it worth $200? The gimmicks sound cool but that's a lot of money for something almost entirely plastic.

Andrewdzs, our "Senior" collector, advised that the Aoshima Arcadia, despite not having that many gimmicks was coolers.
I followed his advice and guess what:
I am so deeply satisfied with my $100 85%Diecast Gokin Battleship that I won´t buy the $200 plasticky Yamato.
BTW, the Arcadia light gimmick is AWESOME.... ;D

Yeah, I was interested in the Arcadia too, but I came in too late to find the first versions at a good price (don't like the knife).

Never mind the Knife!
It's removable!!!!!
Grab one and throw the knife away..........
I like the knife though, I feel it gives Harlock a "finish him" move, ala wavemotion gun.

Haha, i wouldnt do that to my knife man... ... The early ver. and the endless galaxy ver. are all the same except the early ver. without the knife and yen price is 12000 while the new ver. is 12800 with the knife.
For SOP, it is really not as interesting as Arcadia, especially it is so light if u make a comparison.. ...I have to get one no matter wut though, it is not a bad piece, but not a must have also.

Well, the Yamato's gimmicks seem more interesting than the arcadia's, with the assorted sound effects and light effects like the wave motion gun firing, etc, and all of the outer armor parts that can be removed. Weight matters to me, but it's not everything. A while back I bought a 1/72 diecast f-15... I like f-15s and the thing weighs way more than most chogokin of comparable price, but it just didn't grab me.
Wish I could find a nice non-knife Arcadia though. Harlock's the man.

You can DO more with the yamato. It is loaded with gimmicks, and everytime you pick it up you find some other neat little thing you didnt see before.
Yes, it's mostly plastic. So $200 is a little high. But I paid $250 for it and I am happy with it. If you are a fan of the design, you cant go wrong.
PRO: lots of gimmicks. Realistic detailing. Looks great. Lights and sounds. mini cosmo cleaner. WAVE MOTION GUN.
CONS: expensive, little metal, fragile (if youre careless).
I found i was bored with the arcadia after 5 minutes. it looks cool, but thats about it.

How is the wave motion gun effect, Josh? Does it sound good? How about the lights?
If it's done really well that could be enough for me right there, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that it was unimpressive.

The yamato the gimics are a its strong suit and the arcadia the weight is its forte. So, each has its own appeal. Therefore, I bought both. You wont regret either one.

just got mine yesterday, I couldn't put it down, there's just too much you can do with it and on top of that it looks very well detailed anime accurate.
IMO Its the best rendention of the yamato you can buy. from the rotating turrets to its lights and sound gimmicks as well as various compartment you can explore it truly is an exceptional toy.
There are a couple of points that do bother me:
i) I don't like the stand at all. It doesn't hold the yamato securely. It has a "molded" holder which should hold the "back-bottom" of the ship securely even has a peg but it just keeps poping back out well at least mine does.
ii) tiny parts, I'm bound to loose a couple of them one of these days.
that's pretty much it, the lack of die-cast doesn't really bother me, I've been paying this type of premium on mostly plastic stuff made by yamato [1/48 vf-1's, monster, Qua, scopedog] for quite some time now I think that this would fall into the same category.

I got mine at toysq 2 here in toronto for $280CAN which translates to about $250US without the "ebay wait lag"
I don't regret buying it at all, I've been meaning to get this puppy since I missed it the 1st time round.
I also have the aoshima arcadia, both ships are nice and I really can't see myself choosing one over the other as each appeals to me in different ways.
I also think its worth mentioning how bandai goes out of its way to try and blend the various buttons into the yamato's sculpting. It actually took me awhile t figure out how to deploy the wings as the button was well camoflaged....screws?? what screws? none in sight and the controls to rotate both sets of the turrets are all in one side while being nicely meshed with the sculpting....truly a piece deserving of the "curio" treatment

Hopefully they've made the main antenna behind the smokestack out of a hard plastic.

The box has some minor differences. The original one have five chinese words on it, where the re-issue doesnt.
