Hello fellow SOC fanatics... I just recently acquired 2 Ikea enclosed, glass shelves for my precious robots--I even added lights. To celebrate, I opened and displayed the 7 remaining SOC's I had in sealed boxes. I now have my whole collection (GX1 to 27 and the B/PX's) displayed. I still need to dust most of the robots. The lights in the shelves really show all of the dust. I hope this new display system keeps the bad elements out. I can't wait to add my GX28 when it arrives. Do you guys have this kind of display system? Are you happy with it? Is there something I should know about this kind of system? Oh yeah, one of the glass shelvings slipped while I was arranging my Zambot. The glass plate and robots came crashing down. Thankfully, nothing broke. I will never do that again! I'll simply just place my robots and leave it alone. That experience was just way too traumatic. I expected the glass plates to be more stable... Oh well, my robots look good in them (this is all that matters for now).

Nope. I've already spent thousands of dollars on these babies. I have to control myself. Plus, I would have to get another one of these shelves to fit them. I don't have anymore room--thank God!
Also, I may stop collecting all of the SOC's after Voltes V. Voltes V may mark the pinnacle of my collection (even though I am a bigger Mazinger Z fan). I will get Danguard Ace, Daimos, Balatak and all of the other robot shows that were shown in the Philippines. The upcoming SOC's (aside from Black Ox and Voltes V) look way too cheesey for me. This may very well be my common sense kicking in as well. How much money is spent on a collection/obsession anyway? Okay, knowing me... I will cave in and buy everything in the future. I just now need to put in more money in my retirement plan (oh the responsibilities of being in my 30's and married...).

Which Ikea case is that? That looks cool...how much? also just some advice...be careful with the overhead light, it may make your display look awesome but it can also fade and create heat...heat and paint and plastic, not a good crowd of three. BTW, is that a window behind the case?
Who is Balatak?

Hey 00silvergt,
The case is called DETOLF. I don't know if this is the name of the product or company. The cool thing is is that the system is only about $60 each--the lights are extra.
Thanks for the lighting warning. I don't plan to have it on a lot. I'll turn it on when we have guests and stuff...
Balatak is a show that shown along with Mazinger and Voltes in the Philippines in the 70's. I don't know remember much about it except that it was hilarious and I think that there were 3 robots. I loved the show!

Hey lancerx,
I am so glad that I don't stray from the SOC's (okay I have some B/PX's but that's it!)

Do you guys have this kind of display system? Are you happy with it? Is there something I should know about this kind of system? Well ... I had 2 of those myself ... black ones but i got rid of them . WHy ? because I got bored of them and you'll want more space !!! . The problem I had with mine was i didnt like the fact the shelves werent adjustable. GRendizer and Mazinger for instance looked so tiny to be displayed that only if the Chogokins were all the same size as dancougar and zambot ... well , perhaps maybe it would be more proportionate... I got new display cases, ill show you sometime (i have to take off to work in a bit )... but the glass cases are pretty cool ... i also hate the fact that theyre so common . I see those cases everywhere ! but still a good price for what its worth .. =)

I probably wouldn't have gotten an enclosed dispaly system if these robots are not such dust magnets. I see the glass shelves as secondary items and so I don't really care if they are "common." I'd rather have my collection stand out than the display system.
Speaking of dust... What is the best way to remove it?

mazfan: congrats bro, nice display case you got there. regarding dust on gokins, you can wipe them with a clean soft flannel cloth at minimal pressure, to remove dust and oils from fingers. on cleaning ur display case, you can also use a flannel cloth. but keep it separate from the one you use in cleaning ur gokins. for further gokin and display case maintenance: robotjapan.proboards12.com/index.cgi?board=SOC&action=display&thread=1129202429&page=1hope the thread helps. best regards.

hello...there is another "CASE"in IKEA, which is wood on the side. It have adjustable shelf. Or you can drill some hole to customize your shelf. If you want I can take a picture of the shelf for you to see....nice collection

Hey mannyD... Thanks for the link and nice comment on my display case. Wow, all of the advice from the link seem overwhelming! I don't really want to treat my robots as museum pieces. As I mentioned in my previous postings... I like being hands on with my robots. I play with them and stuff (I don't have battles with them or anything though). I want to keep them in great condition but not to the extent that they are not fun for me anymore. I don't ever plan on selling them and so they are mostly for my own enjoyment. Okay, my other goal is to impress visitors with them as well (though I have a suspiscion that they kinda think that this is a geeky thing to have... I don't care I think that they are da bomb).
menace219... Yes, I'd love to see a pix of the "other" I keas shelf. Thanks.

DETOLF are good and cheap - I like mine (I have a strikingly similar look in my living room to your setup!). Other posts point out a very interesting thing tho - you do tend to run out of space quickly and since the shelves are not adjustable, SOCs tend to take up a lot of wasted "footprint" area on each shelf. As in, each of the 4 compartments never look really "full."
Anyway - congratulations on the acquisition!

HI Ben-Ohki... Wow, you have your display system in the living room--that's prime real estate. I have mine in my studio (which is part of our home)--this should impress my clients.
It's cool to hear that you have the DETOLF as well. Does your glass plates slip off the thin bases? One of mine did when I was adjusting one of the robots. The plate came crashing down, as well as my robots. Thankfully, nothing was damaged. I am wondering if they slip off on their own over time. I notice that the whole shelf vibrates when I open their glass doors.
Imagine if I still live in San Francisco. This shelf system is not ideal for the earthquakes (no matter how minor)

Hi Mazfan, Nice setup! I also have the Detolf cabinets. They are great for the price that you pay. As far as the shelves slipping off the side brackets, I have not had this issue. I was looking at mine last night and it looks like the glass is too wide for this to happen. Is it possible that the shelves are dimentionally different in length than width. You may be able to turn them in the cabinet and eliminate this issue. On another note, perhaps a special bushing can be attached to the metal rungs on the sides to prevent this from happening. The small bushings that come with the cabinet could be replaced with surgical tubing of a larger diameter to compensate for the space that is allowing the shelf to slip free. Sorry about the crash and burn you had! Glad everything was ok afterward. Anyway, just a few thoughts from over here. Later bro!

I think Chen would consider this thread under he "Toy Vault" a.k.a. GALLERY DX. On the other hand, I also think Chen would let us off the hook with this thread since we're all Grendy fans, eh? ;D As for Mazfan's new display case, many toy collectors have also discovered IKEA's DETOLF display case for their own collection. I'm one of them. When I first saw the DETOLF at a local IKEA, I was, like "Whoah... cool!" This was less expensive than a custom acrylic display case and less prone to scratches. I ordered the DETOLF without hesitation. When I went to pick it up the next day, to my surprise, the entire package was awfully heavy. I had to lug the thing half a block to the main street and then hail a taxi. Fortunately, the first taxi I hailed allowed me to put the heavy package in his vehicle; furthermore, his car had enough room. Thank goodness there's an elevator in my apartment. Well, I don't have to go on with the details of how assembling the DETOLF can be a pain in the arse. I'm usually the do-it-yourself type guy, but I gotta admit that I asked my girlfriend to help hold the glass panels while I assembled the top lid. Yeah, having glass cases is ideal for SOCs. It keeps dust off, and plus, you can actually see what's in your collection instead of wondering what you have stored in your closet. Besides, taking your SOCs in and out of their boxes can actually put some wear on the boxes themselves. You gotta remember this if you plan to resell in the future. I kind of think the price for the DETOLF is a bit pricey, though. Ever since I started collecting SOCs, my idea of price value is pegged to how many SOCs I can buy for the same price. For example, I'd think to myself, "How many SOCs can I buy for one DETOLF?" Well, I still think display cases are worth it since they make it easy to maintain your collection while appreciating it at the same time. On the other hand, I've discovered a less expensive alternative to the DETOLF - wooden display cases with glass panels. They're originally designed for displaying chinaware or storing books, but now I use them for my SOCs and growing Gashapon collection. The wood also controls some of the humidity. I think this is the next great thing after the DETOLF. Check it out. [ftp]http://www.geocities.com/chogokin_tamashi/photo/my_shelf_1.jpg[/ftp] My only DETOLF. [ftp]http://www.geocities.com/chogokin_tamashi/photo/my_shelf_2.jpg[/ftp] My display case seems stuffed, but it's nothing compared to other collectors. There's this one guy on ToyboxDX who posted a picture of his DETOLF stuffed with Popy Chogokins. It looked like a Chogokin sardine can. [ftp]http://www.geocities.com/chogokin_tamashi/photo/my_shelf_3.jpg[/ftp] As you can see, my Gashapon collection is spilling over to my SOC collection. My collection is growing almost every day. There are about 10 toyshops in the vicinity of my neighborhood. I also make 6 trips to Hong Kong a year. I can't resist buying whatever catches my eye. [ftp]http://www.geocities.com/chogokin_tamashi/photo/my_shelf_4.jpg[/ftp] My anime gals gashapon collection. I guess I'm a regular otaku. Do I see myself like these guys in the future? Who knows... Say, I gotta maintenence question for you guys. The glass panels of my gashapon shelf cloud up and build up some kind of oily resin which I wipe off regularly, or I just remove the glass panels and wash. This doesn't happen much with the SOCs shelves. Is it because of the plastic? Lastly... check out the swimsuit babes. [ftp]http://www.geocities.com/chogokin_tamashi/photo/my_shelf_5.jpg[/ftp] Oh, yeah, and one more thing... definitely no lighting lamps in my display cases.

VERY nice collections and cases!
I've been wanting to get a glass case or two, or more, but I often find myself feeling the same way roboto does about how many SOCs or TFs I could buy for the price of a showcase, even though I know sooner or later I'm gonna have to buckle down and get one.
