Thanks sooooo much, everybody! He wasn't expensive; just a bit of work. I really, really wanted more black SOCs for my collection. After some consideration, I picked Garada over Dabulas and the Getta Robo G team. Garada's simpler than dabulas and cheaper than the GettaGteam; who might look better in white anyway. I sketched out some rough ideas for the color scheme. Early ideas included a metallic red instead of copper and a strict black/gray color scheme. I opted for the copper to contrast the silver and gold trim of the black hero bots. Once I had G in hand, I simply disassembled him<<<tip for anybody else: keep screws separate and marked; there's slightly different sizes and threads>>>. Pieces were coated with an ultra-flat black that gave it a rough finish and a matte sealer, which gives it a slight shine. His toes were buffed down w/ a Dremel to the base metal to take the copper paint better. They were also masked with teflon tape to give a straight line. Copper bits were sealed with a gloss sealer to stand out. Black on sickles and dimples on chest were hand painted. Head is a white base, followed by 5-6 coats of glow in the dark (glows well, not great), eyes, stripes, neck are hand painted, followed by matte sealer. I'm still painting his other hands: one pair black and one glow. Biggest trick was reassembly: see my screw tip above, and being extra careful to not let the screwdriver slip and scratch the paint. From disassembly to finish was about two weeks, but that will vary. Parts of doing this were tricky, Id be glad to help anybody attempting this; or I'd be willing to replicate it(or a variant) for the Garada plus a small fee. Any talented RJ graphic designers wanna help me make a box?

What kinda glowing material did you use to paint on the face? Did you melt some glow-in-da-dark plastic toy all over his face? sh*t, man, That looks friggin GOOD! Even the sickles look BADASS!!! I may not be a black-figure fan, but I sure admire this blackie-custom job here! Thanks for Showin! zozo-Magengar Oh yeah, there's also this guy:

Man, I gotta tell ya... if any of you think about customizin your expensive SOCs, TAKE YOUR TIME and DO IT RIGHT. Refer to Capt's example with his custom black Garada, and follow every detailled advice he explains to ya. Plastics and vinyls are somewhat forgiving, because these are castable to make up for any broken parts... ...but SOCs are delicate creatures to be handled with the utter-most Care; if the diecast breaks, yer Done. zozo-Magengar

I'm thinking a box may be a bit more of a challenge, perhaps a sticker, like Aoshima does, on the front of the box, with a picture of Black Garada and a number...
Oh yeah, I started a new thread in the gallery with a couple new pics. Unfortunately, my battery died after three shots.

that's really an awesome garada custom, captainamerica!!! I always fall for the black ones, the first SoC I ever got was the GX-04B. wish I could get a black boss borot but that seems completely out of reach nowadays. that's really great craftsmanship! thanks for sharing with us MIB

They Should, and they'd BETTER. If any of their crew are lurking here among us right now, they need to see your work... I'm sure they wouldn't pass up the opportunity of offering you a job with them. Yeah, they got the toys-- but we got the Eyes, and there are many Talented individuals here who've got the Hands to do such fine work as This. ;D zozo-Magengar 3000? ouch! ...but if Bandai wants to call me....

Yeah, that glow-in-the-dark face is really a nice touch... ...every time I look at it, it reminds me of the little white "geisha" head's face on the forehead of that Zeiram creature.
