Did you guys ever hear about this? Before the Court of Paris on November 28, 2005, MANGA DISTRIBUTION and DECLIC IMAGES which have duplicated and released GOLDORAK DVD without any rights, have been condemned to pay a total amount of 7.2 millions of euros for damages on the ground of counterfeiting and unfair competition. The Court of Paris has also ordered the prohibition and the withdrawal for destruction of the counterfeiting DVD and the publication of the judgement in three newspapers. The Court has decided that the Judgement shall be immediately executed and for a half for the damages. But it appears that in the future, our lucky french speaking fans will be able to get a "ORIGINAL" box set of Grandizer/goldrake on DVD. www.toei-anim.co.jp/english/press/press_goldorak4.html

You know, it may shock some people on this board to know that there are some French Goldorak fans who are not anime or Japanese robot fans...
I point this out because I have a buddy at work who is French Canadian and I think he's pretty typical. He downloaded and authored his own Goldorak DVD (in French of course) for his own private enjoyment (and this was years ago, so it's not like it was "illegal at the time." But he doesn't know that Goldorak is a dub of a sequel to Mazinger, etc... And basically, what I'm saying is that it just sounds an awful lot like Toei Animation is cashing in on those last few French speaking fans who haven't done what my friend did.
It's a matter of remastering the video but they already have the French language dubs to use. This was done for Albator a few years ago for distribution in French markets and a new English dub of the Harlock TV series never appeared... so what I'm saying is I'm not holding my breath for a new English dub of Grendizer either.

I guessI shouldn't be surprised that Grandizer is the first character to get caught up in this sort of nonsense.
As popular as Voltz V is in the Phillipines, Voltron in the USA, and Maz Z in Japan are, the French speaking world has even more love for Grandizer. To my knowledge, it is the ONLY tv show to ever capture 100% of the ratings for its time slot for an entire nation. If you were in France and had a TV, you watched Goldorak. period. That's a huge market; no wonder this wound up in litigation.

You maybe waiting for a long time... theres a few legal stuff to go through.. and I hear its complicated. If Toei just subtitled their own stuff(in a few languages) ... I'm pretty sure more people would pay the big bucks for a original DVD. Even if its only region 2 DVD.

I think they only did that for the French due to what happened. I don't think they are going to do that for everyone. I would surely not appreciate it if they come out with that in english after i spent a lot of money buying the original release. know what i mean? I'm sure I'm not the only one with a similar situation.

There's just Something about Grendizer- Grandizer- Goldorak- whatever, that has captured the French And the Italian markets. I can't place my finger on it for the life of me! What Is so special about Grendizer? What do the French and Italian see in this robot that I don't see? Grendizer is an Awesome robot, but there's more to it than what meets the eye. And, like some of the other popular super-robots, Grendizer has survived through the generations. Perhaps out French and Italian friends can help explain this phenomena. zozo-Magengar but 7.2 milion is a lot of money! is the goldorak dvd market that big in france!?!

My understanding is that when Goldorak aired in France, there were just two TV networks. Goldorak ran opposite a farm report and easily netted 100% of the ratings. Everybody watched it(and not 'everybody' but EVERYBODY), so it was a cartoon that an entire generation of French children grew up with. It's like star wars, mickey mouse and Mazinger rolled up into one sweet super robot!

For me, all go Nagai is influencial. Grendizer as well. Not only did Voltes rule in the Philippines, but so did many other shows. Grendizer, being one of them. So it's kinda like your passion for Mazinger, magengar. Also, Grendizer is in the same "time-line" as Mazinger, Great Mazinger, Getta Robo, Getta Robo G..etc...

Just to let you know that in the French world (I'm French Canadian) this is old news. Toei annonced a while ago that they would sometimes release Goldorak (Grendizer) But there is a problem, Goldorak is very popular in both France and Canada, but France ir PAL Zone 2 and Canada is NTSC Zone 1.
I doubt they will release it some day, but I do hope. I have a copy of Declic Image DVD. They are well done, but I sure miss the original thing!

The original Japan DVD don't have any subtitle. For now there is no HK boxset that that subtitle like Mazinger or Getta Robo.
Declic Image DVD is in French. Toei DVD that should be released eventually will be in French, but all hope to see it in both French and Japanese with subtitle.
One of the major problem with Grendizer is that it is censored. So if you only put Japan image with France sound it would not work. Some think that the whole serie is being redubbed.
When Grendizer was aired no on knew about Getter or Mazinger, so for us Koji is a total loser in the story. That's why plot wise they are a lot of problem withthe story.

back to France in 1978, the French audio-visual landscape was dominated by the American cartoons and typic Frenchy productions but nothing really exciting. Suddenly in July 1978, Grendizer (aka Goldorak)appeared on our small screens without nobody really beleiving in it and it was a phenomenal succes. Today, though that the public of time grew and is unaware of the existence of the other Japanese robots (finally not all) grendizer remained a shock which revolutionized French television forever. That's it, bros!

I was able to pick one up in chinatown.
