Got my Griffon today at work from toywave.
As expected it is on par with the previous Patlabors releases by CM.
Although mine is not without minor QC problems such as a part of the toy became “un-glued" prior to opening no biggie. Otherwise, everything about it was perfect from the paint job down to its “joint-tightness".
I got the Flight edition, it comes with the Patlabor handgun as opposed to the Aqua which comes with a severed Patlabor 2 head.
Die-cast Content:
This toy is no “light-weight” like its predecessors it is about 80% die-cast. In fact, its would be easier to list the parts that aren’t die-cast:
Shoulder joint [but the pointy armor on them are], head, fist, canopy hatch, wings, a part of the hip.[hip is mostly die-cast save for its thingy for a lack of a better word]. That’s it, everything else is die-cast with a nice classy glossy black paint.
Joints:
Still no ratchet joints but it really does not need it, its joints are tight enough.
Gimmicks:
Its are its “flight-pack” accessory, additional hands, opening canopy, and exclusive parts [patlabor’s gun]
The feature that resonated, for me, was its opening canopy, as with the labors it comes with a fully painted figure that sits in its cockpit. Unlike the labors I don’t think you can remove the figure, nor does it come with an extra figure. Although good part is that the figure looks more correctly scaled @ 1/48 [at least for scale-freaks such as myself]
I didn’t really miss the LED gimmick as I felt it wasn’t appropriate in this toy’s case.
Although since there was no LED , no extra sitting figure and no stand I would have thought that CM would at least lower its price a little.
So to sum up, this figure is pretty much similar to the labors in terms of its engineering, make, & quality. If you find the Griffon design appealing then this is a "MUST have". This is the definitive representation of the Griffon in glorious die-cast ;D
This should really be an SOC as it is well worthy of being though of in the same lines, quite possibly better
