Hi, I just won a godmarz gb-88 custom type on ebay, for $104. And I was wondering how does it differ from the regular dx version gb-68? Is just the packaging different? I haven't recieved it yet but I'm pretty excited. Judging from the pictures it looks to be the same as the dx, at least I sure hope it is.I just wonder what the whole "custom" thing means. Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm pretty new to the original Japanese side of this stuff, although I've loved super robots for over 20 years, ever since Voltron. Thanks

That was one of the first ones I bought when I first started collecting. It is some sort of taiwanese version that was authorized by bandai. (On the box it says made in taiwan and on the robots it says made in japan). Its smaller than the Godaikin Godmarz and you do have to remove the arms from the smaller robots before you combine as they do not fold. The Robots that form the legs do not have separate legs themselves, they have a one piece bottom section but they do fire missles. Alot of differences in total but it does look pretty decent when combined and I thought the quality was ok. On ebay $104 for it is a pretty good deal as I have seen them reach around $130 but some will argue that its not worth that much. I sold mine last year but would buy one again in a heartbeat.

Howabout Diecast content? I've heard that the custom is entirely plastic.

Well I finally got my God Marz custom in the mail today. When I first opened it I was a little bit dissapointed by how the individual robots looked. But after I finally got the thing combined, it didn't look that bad, although ripping off the arms of the smaller robots to combine them just seemed... well wrong. It seems mostly plastic but it looks like there might be some diecast, of course that might be wishful thinking on my part.
Does anyone know how much bigger the Godaikin God Marz is? And also does the combined Godaikin God Marz's legs move? If the Godaikin God Marz's legs don't move and it isn't that much bigger, I think I'll hold onto the custom for now. But if there is a big difference, I think I might pick up the Godtron knock off.

Avoid the Godtron bootleg at all costs. They really cheaped out on a lot of the details. I suppose it's useful if you want extra fists and accessories, but that's about it.
As for the original DX Godmarz, it's about as articulated as the other gattai toys of that era: ie; not at all.

gb-88 was also one of my first chogokin i bought on ebay when i first started. i have to say, it was pure ignorance and inexperience that i bought it. the version i bought was the taiwan version and was not impressive when i got it. but as all have reported, looked decent when combined. i have seen a full japanese versoin of gb-88 on ebay before but its not very often that you'll see it.

I won a godaikin version Godmarz on ebay a few days ago and am waiting for it to arrive. I think it's started to become hard to find. I do agree about staying away from the TW version, it doesn't look right. I looks ok from pics but in person is a totally different deal.

heres a picture of the real Japanese version with the Popy logo. notice that the box does not bear the HK (taiwan) toy company that replicated it. more details search for #250008878002 on ebay.

Wow, the box is very close to the taiwan version in appearance. Is there another way to tell besides the "made in japan" print? Just curious.

It's not totally true that the TW version is different, there are 2 TW versions, the ones you find on E-bay all the time, these are from 1995 from a company called :'Best toy co.Ltd' the did Guardian,Go-Lion and Godmarz. Their version is cheap,no clear plastic on the head (so you can see the smaller robot inside),not clear plastic on the chest where there should be a window instead it's painted red,no silver on the belt, the little bits that attach the arms of the 2 bot that form the arms of the Godmarz (man does that make any sense...) are in one piece of yellow plastic instead of 2 pieces (white and yellow that rotate),Shiny blue stickers on the lower leg part of the bot that forms the body (it should be painted blue)and the main difference is on the lower legs of the bots that form the feet, instead of having some chrome and yellow plastic parts they replaced these parts with stickers. And last very bad quality plastic. Overall it looks really cheap and 'crap' But, there is another TW version that came out in 1983/84 which is identical to the Popy/Bandai one and has all the features and colours of the original and looks exactly like it's Japanese counterpart.I think they also did Daltanious. That one is a difficult piece of TW bootlegg to get hold of.

So what is the difference between the Japanese DX and the Japanese custom version then?

For a start, the Custom is smaller, it does not have the same transforming features and mechanisms as the DX.For instance the 2 bots that form the legs of the big bot, their legs are 'glued' together, they don't separate like the DX,the arms of the small bots (the green and white bots) have to come off to transform into Godmarz's arms,in the DX version they have a folding mechanism. The head of Godmarz,is also a separate piece, in the DX, it folds up, and pushes the other head (of the main bot's body) at the back. The 2 black parts that form the feet of the white and green bots on the Dx can be rotated backwards so that thay don't show when transformed into Godmarz,in the Custom, they do not move. The thing that the DX does not have: the 2 bots that form the legs can fire missiles in the Custom version. The custom is a bit like a DX of the Standard version. Unless you have to have every version of that bot, I'd go for the DX.

I am awaiting a Godaikin Godmarz DX which I won in Ebay (coming from Canada). I dare say I paid a bit for it (under $500 - don't tell the wife!) but it is worth it because it is MIB. I am glad I went for the DX instead of the custom though, that makes it more worth it. Thanks again.

Yes I saw that godmarz dx knockoff on ebay last month. I believe it was called combinebot and the picture on the front of the box was just like the popy version. I almost bought it just because of the rarity of the item, but the seller wanted $160.00 plus shipping for a mint one in a beat up box. If it was just a bit cheaper I might have bought it.
And on another note the floodgates have opened as there are quite a few gb-88 on ebay at the moment.
