Does the DX version of this toy have diecast in it? A friend of mine had a large 'DX size' version of Dairugger when he was young, but remembers it being all plastic. We're trying to figure out if what he had was a bootleg or if that's just the way Popy released it.

Mine doesn't. Unless you count the axles and the odd rivet! Mind you, I'm (still) missing the two vehicle feet....

Well, there is the ST (diecast), DX (partially diecast), and then the BIG dairugger (released as the Deluxe voltron warrior) - that was all plastic. Read more here: www.collectiondx.com/node/1063

Josh, do you have a photo showing the size comparison between the ST, DX, and largest one? Was the DX ever released by Mattel? In other words, does this show up often on ebay or are they typically all the ST and large one?

No, the DX never had an once of die-cast parts for either the popy or the Matchbox release.
I think it’s also worth noting that the popy & matchbox releases are exactly the same [like most all godaikin vs Jp release] except that the matchbox didn’t come with a sword while the popy did, and of course the cardboard box design is also different. Even the markings on the feet on mine are identical down to the popy trademark on the vehicle.
So whatever $70-$100 or more premium one pays for the Jp version boils down to a measy plastic sword and a different cardboard box J
Not sure if there was a matchbox sword which sold separately like the lion version.

The Popy version has a sword, 2 small silver antennae on the leg vehicles, and the blue waist vehicle has an antennae instead of a flat silver plate. The Popy version also comes with STICKERS, although i have never seen a toy with them applied. There were two different runs for this toy in the US. The first version had original popy markings, but the second version had bandai 1984 english copyright markings.

DX verison is much nicer than the US release matchbox set. Its got better paint colors and quality. not to mention the box is much nicer than MATCHBOX and with decals make this set a winner. Of course the antennas on the vehicles makes HUGE difference as well. We currently has a set up for sale on ebay right now. Please search ID name DX*CHOGOKIN*KING from ebay or check the FOR SALE section on this forum. Bryan

Lol...my aunt brought the DX version back from HK. I took off the blades on the helicopters, because I though it looked funny in Robot form.
I remember when the local Pic N Save was selling both "Voltrons" for 20 bucks.

But the popy ST GB-73 does have Die cast right. Because I just got one Yesterday and I was holding it in my hand, and I am pretty sure that the body and the legs are made of metal.

Same, it had diecast torso and the legs were diecast too. The two lion heads of the feet, fires out and are made of plastic. I'll even settle for a match box version if I can find one at a decent price. Growing up, I remember that one of my cousin had a bootleg version of Voltron III. It had a small window box display and I knew that he got it at some swap meet. When I was young, I've always asked for one of those. They were small and affordable since they were bootlegs. But they resemble the real thing in every way. Heck the reason I ended up with a Dairugger XV was because on that one day that my father was going to buy me a Voltron, they didn't have Voltron 3. Thinking back 20+ years ago, the only thing I can remember that was different from the GB-73 that I got yesterday and the bootleg version was that the bootlegs version didn't have missles to be fire out from the legs and that it was not package with a sword. And if I remember correctly, the bootleg version of Voltron 3 didn't have feets that can be fired out.

I saw a picture of a kikoukantai dairugger XV in a Large brownish red box w/ some gold foil. Is this also a 15 vehicle combiner version?

The kikoukantai dairugger XV combines into the three different teams, but does not break up into fifteen individual units. The only parts that separate are the feet, hands, waist, and cheast plane
