New pics. My thoughts: I am THRILLED for this. I have been waiting ten freaking years for this toy. I love the VF-11b, but I've always been too afraid to buy Yamato's 1/72 version because of the breaking hip problem. This looks like it will be a fairly simple toy, without the complexities of the YF-19 and 21, so hopefully it will be nice and sturdy without any problems. Aesthetically I love it, and gimmicks like the escape pod cockpit are right up my alley. I love the inclusion of the booster packs, too.

I think we can thank Bandai for this. It seems competition between Yamato and Bandai is forcing each company to work harder and in the end it's us fans who are the winners.

SCHWEET!!! Chen: True true about Bandai and Yamato, but the latter will still charge you for an arm, a leg, and your sister.

I wonder how the heatshield works this time around.

I wonder how the heatshield works this time around. You know, I'm almost wondering if it's part of the escape pod gimmick. Like, just pop out the cockpit pod, flip it over, and the other side is orange. That's my guess, and I hope that's what it is because that would be the most simple method with no moving parts to break.

I see a faint orange at the tip of the front of the cockpit. It is possible you can push down the cockpit pod a little and slide the heatshield, the nose cone is large enough to store the heatshield.

You could be right on that. I also read a theory that the shield could split into two pieces (notice what appears to be a seam) and that it could come from the front and back when you push the cockpit down, but I don't know about that because it doesn't seem like there is enough room behind the cockpit for the larger portion of the shield.
But yeah, there is definitely a little speck of orange at the front in that photo, which would support your theory more than mine. However it works is bound to be clever.

However it works is bound to be clever. Yeap, Yamato's outdone themselves so far with their last Macross releases (SV-51's and the YF-21).

I've always wondered why the heatshield on the 11b is so flamboyant. I really didn't like it at first but I guess I've learned to live with it. I'd love a grey one for that all-around low-viz look.

Flamboyant? Isn't it suppose to be orange?

Flamboyant? Isn't it suppose to be orange? Yes, that's the color it's supposed to be. I remember seeing it for the first time and wondering why it was so garish, like what the reasoning was behind putting such a bright heatshield on such a subdued fighter. That was ten years ago or so. These days I really don't care, it looks pretty kick ass no matter what color the heat shield is.

What I've learned from years of Shoot-em-ups: You have to give enemy pilots an obvious target to aim for so they know your weak point, of course, hence the bright orange "SHOOT ME HERE" spot on the chest.
They don't call them cannon fodder for nothing.

Heheh, might as well go all out and print the words "STRIKE HERE FOR MAXIMUM DAMAGE" with a giant arrow.

LOL. I would actually LOVE to see one repainted like that. Call it the "VF-11b SG Custom" 'SG' stands for Shooting Gallery of course.
