I didn't know Combattler V had a "tank mode", as shown in one of the new pictures above! 1. Was this mode in the Combattler V cartoons? 2. I know GX-31V Voltes-V also has a tank mode ... but that supposedly was never shown in the Voltes-V cartoons? Can anyone confirm? As to tank mode: Combattler V - YES Voltes V - NO

The voltank mode of voltes, i believe, was an addition by the manufacturers to the toy. Since they figured that since voltes and combattler are from the same author and share the same structure, they added it for more play value. And it shows.
What would be interesting to see in toy form is fuselage & wing portion of crewzer 1 BECOME A SHIELD. An early conceptual design of voltes illustrates this, making it similar to the hikari sentai maskman robo (the 2nd best robot in my book).

Combattler V is one of my least favorite SOC's... However, the new box design is making me want to get this latest version.
I have the original color (really flimsy) and b&w (a bit more stable) versions of this robot... Yawn. The b&w version is my only b&w... It was given to me as a gift (I don't collect b&w's).

i got my GX-03 like a year ago and finally opened it this afternoon. I wanted to find out wheher it is really as bad as people say. It turned out that i was quite annoyed by the following things: 1. parts falling down during handling - treads, wings, and all. 2. have to take out a few pieces during transformation 3. relatively little articulation compared to Voltes 4. this one annoys me the most, the head is thin, and it keeps leaning backwards. Either that or Combattler really enjoy looking at the ceiling at my place. I can push it down so it doesn't lean, but then it looses the ability to turn its head...
I hope these issues won't be with the GX-50. Regardless I'm not going to buy this unless prices drop quite a bit. Not my favorite design. it does look pretty cool standing next to Voltes and Daimos though.

You need to have a Japan mailing address in order to buy the Nanbara Base even though you have the coupon , right? I hope not.

You need to have a Japan mailing address in order to buy the Nanbara Base even though you have the coupon , right? I hope not. Probably. That's how it's always been done with mail-aways in the past. Some Japan-based e-stores will probably offer a service where they'll open your toy up, take the coupon, and order you the base for a nominal fee. That's often done, as well.

LOL, judging by the posts in the Toysdaily thread looks like a lot of folks are pissed off about the Nambara being a mail-away. Hmm, I wonder if this will become a new trend and they start rolling out "bases" for the SOC heroes through the website? Gold

So I finally opened and transformed my Respect for Voltes (I've been waiting to do this for months). While playing around with this robot, I also decided to take out my original Voltes.... And guess what? My old one decided to do a shelf dive. Pieces flew and one of the fang like torso broke off. It took me quite some time to find it. I was able to glue it back and now my old Voltes V can be in the robot form again (just one of the fangs does not make this possible).
I am sharing this because my old Combattler V was worse. That thing was so floppy... The original Voltes V isn't any better. I will only get the new Combattler V if it is sturdy.
I had such high hopes with the original SOC Voltes V... I am Filipino after all. It disappointed me in so many levels. But as of now, I am really liking the Respect version.
So glad I have this board to vent... I am getting 3 SOC's for Christmas!

Okay, let me try to explain the Filipino + Voltes V obsession... I think that the show took off/became an obsession in my home country because it has the following mixture:
- the colors of Voltes V--red, blue, yellow and white--are the colors of the Philippine flag - the mom dies like in the second episode or something (Filipinos love this kind of drama) - the dad has been kidnapped by aliens (again, Filipinos love this kind of drama and now it has some kind of sci-fi/supernatural thing... an added bonus... and much more drama) - there are siblings as main heroes (Filipinos have a strong family connection/bond) - awesome intro and closing credits (Catchy tunes... we love to sing... Man, I remember singing in Japanese as a kid... I can still sing the songs and it has been over 30 years) - a strong sense of right & wrong and people work hard to do the noble thing - there's lots of battles and things blow up (Filipinos love action)
Hope this explains it a bit. I am actually a bigger Mazinger Z fan than Voltes V. An anomaly in the Philippines.

read more about marcos and Voltes V here: users.animanga.com/voltesv/faq/trivia.htmlMARCOS ISSUE :: The cancellation of the show back in the 1970's in the Philippines was not because Ferdinand Marcos, the dictator of the Philippines, thought the show had messages of rebellion. It was cancelled because the TV station that aired it back then was the number one TV station in the country, beating the other 2 TV stations that were owned by the government. To negatively affect the ratings of the station that aired Voltes V, the dictator banned the airing of super robot anime, as well as other top rating TV shows like "Charlie's Angels", saying that the violent content had a negative effect on children. After the dictator was unseated in the famous "People Power Revolution" in 1986, Voltes V was shown again, but not entirely.
