Just got my Binaltech Smokescreen from HLJ, had some time to play with him and have to say I'm really pleased.
Here are a couple of quick pics, I'll try and take some better ones when I've got a bit more time at the weekend...
Diecast is limited to various parts of the car's body, the hood, bonnet and doors primarily. The inner framework of the robot is solid ABS plastic. Robot mode stands a respectable 7 inches high and the car is a similar length long. Personally I like the size, gives him a little more presence than a lot of the older transformer cars. Paint work is fantastic, large amounts of detailed work and nice an shiny too.
Transformation is relatively complex, but no worse than some other recent Transformers to my mind. Consists of 17 stages in the booklet, but I have to admit one or two diagrams had me thinking for a moment. Everything feels solid during the transformation so I wasn't worried about breaking anything. However part of the bonnet did pop off at the final steps which was a little disconcerting though easily restored.
Car mode looks as impressive as a lot of diecast toy cars. Interior is impressively detailed and steering sort of works, it seemed a bit awkward on mine, only magnets connect the system together so its not so solid. One neat feature I appreciated was that the gun folds down and fits under the bonnet, keeping it safely with the toy whilst in car mode. Robot mode is nicely poseable though the real challenge is ensuring Smokescreen remains standing. His feet consist of an adjustable toe and heel section which gives quite a bit of flexibility, but can be a little fiddly whilst trying to balance him.
Well overall I'm really happy with him. As to whether he's worth the money, I think I'd have to see what the US release is like. The metal work certainly adds some weight, but I can't say I'm 100% convinced at the extra cost.
