I've been looking at Popy vintage robots, which is what I tend to like. Now are the Shogun Warriors robots vintage, and were they made in Japan? Are they reboxed Popy products?

Yes they are made in Japan, and yes are repacked Popy, at least the first releases. They came with deleted shooty features, and more limited pivots/articulation in later releases. The backs are stamped with varying degrees of Japanese characters, and English, through the different issues.
Have to see them in person to tell usually, but one packaging clue, is to look for greenish foam tray, as the earlier releases. This is by no means fool-proof though.
They're great. Very nostalgic, and collectable. Go get 'em!

Many "older" collectors, like me, who grow up in the 70ties had Shogun Warriors as kids. So I started my "collecting-career" with Mattel's Shoguns Warriors before I discovered Popy, Takemi, Bullmark,Nakajima,... Today the Shoguns are highly collectable I would say and many of them could get very pricey these days...because many 70ties-kids re-discovered them. So, they are absolutely vintage, in terms of robot-collecting. Here are a few...there are a lot of nice pieces to collect. Good Luck!

Yeah I'm 43 and played with the Popy robots that I got when I was in Japan for a few summers in the 70's and 80's. My cousin in Boston used to have a bunch of the Popy stuff too, tempted to call him. Chogo, do you have suggestions of where to shop online other than ebay? Every time I look at Allen's toybox catalog I recognize more and more of the stuff I played with... like Jacker Tank.

Hey prostockjohn, "do you have suggestions of where to shop online other than ebay":
Well I bought most of my Shogun stuff years ago, mostly "private deals" and in the last years I bought stuff on ebay. I would say keep an eye on the "for sale-section" here and TBDX. You will get them on ebay too. Shogun Warrior pop up quiet often on ebay. There are certain figures that are scarce and expensive. I would say "study" the ebay-market and don't buy the very first figure you see. Condition and if they come with the box have an BIG influence on the price.
BTW. Welcome here man! Good to here that some guys are a bit older than me ;D

45yo hag Here! ;D Thanks for this thread. I enjoy seeing these collectible specimens-- they bring back fond memories of my youth. I only have two of these little figs.......... ...one is a small Mazinga gokin, and the other is a Great Mazinga gokin. These are smaller figures than the SOC and SRC lines... My trouble is I don't know which category "chogokin" name is the small Mazinga, and I don't know the category name for the bigger Great Mazinga. I'll post pics when I get back home later this weekend. zozo-Magengar

In some of the big collections pictures, are some folks only collecting vintage and others are buying SOC reissues?

I guess that depends on the indivual collectors. Some folks enjoy collecting the best of both worlds; others enjoy that, PLUS high-ended knockoffs that look almost Perfectly Exactly like the original.... ...and, there are many hardcore collectors and veterans who are extremely keen about what they collect, especially with these small chogokins (or "gokins"?). zozo-Magengar In some of the big collections pictures, are some folks only collecting vintage and others are buying SOC reissues?

I've tried reading the good seller thread, what do you guys think about about some of the international sellers, like in HK... Like ken456wong@yahoo.com.hk

In some of the big collections pictures, are some folks only collecting vintage and others are buying SOC reissues? It depends on the collectors. Many SOC enthusiasts only collect these (and other) new releases. Many of the vintage collectors only collect vintage. But there are those in between who collect both (myself included, though my focus is definitely more into the vintage). As to certain international sellers (e.g., ken456wong), just know the market value before buying. Some are significantly overpriced, and others backload the cost of the item with increased shipping charges. If you have any questions on particular items, please feel free to PM me. Its always a good idea to watch auctions for a while before diving in full force and/or checking closed ebay auctions to see what similar items previously sold for.

For me only vintage stuff is the "real thing". BTW: ken4567wong's stuff is a bit overpriced. Also his shipping costs are very high too. The auction fotos and item descriptions aren't the best too. KingboyD is totally right: "good idea to watch auctions for a while before diving in full force" Takey your time man. I needed nearly 20 years to get my stuff together

Thanks guys, I've been watching some eBay auctions to get a feel for price, but I don't have a feel for shipping from HK. Is $20 for an ST Popy too much for shipping?
I'm mainly interested in Popy GA and GB stuff, that's what I played with. I found both sides of a Dangard Ace sword (the red one) so I'm wondering if I have one at my mother's house.
I know everyone is different, but I like the loose played with stuff because I get a kick out of see how the toys have held up over 35 years.
Also I have one or two small repairs to make, one set of the Daltanius guy figure's antlers are broken, do you guys use Krazy glue?

In terms of the $20 shipping charge, it depends on the price of the toy. I always factor in all costs when determining if something is worth the price. I'm like you. I like the loose stuff too. Its more in my price range, and I mostly just want to get the gist of the toy. I don't need every accessory since you can't display the toys with them anyway. Also, there's only so much I personally am willing to spend on a toy, no matter how much I want it. Many collectors will only purchase complete MIB toys and advise others to do so too. But this hobby has to fit your budget. Plus, I prefer to get several decent loose figures rather than one MIB toy. More for your money, IMO. It just depends on your collecting philosophy. In terms of repairs, if you're just keeping it for yourself, use whatever works. I do use Krazy glue or something similar if it will hold (plastics). Metals require something different. For peeling stickers, I find that simple glue sticks work great.

Thanks I'll probably try crazy glue for Atlus' head gear.
From doing a quick browse of that link, it looks like the prices are the same or a bit higher, but the robots are of better average quality. Are you guys using proxies to bid, and then what is their cut and is shipping ~ $20 for one ST?
I started buying some loose robots, we'll see how it all pans out.
On a different note, how would one (I'm not going to buy it but) verify that the D17 on eBay right now is really from 1977, would you need to ask the seller to show that it says popy on it? the reissue would say Japan on it too so that would be inconclusive right?

The D17 looks vintage and in good condition with lots of accessories. Foto of the back of D17 would be nice... But I'm not sure about the price, seem a bit high. Seller with only 5 feedbacks...hmmmmm
I'm not a specialist for D17 prices. Bought mine 15 years ago MIB.

That price is INSANE! You could probably find it boxed for half that. Again, seek advice before buying until you're more familiar with the market. In terms of editions, I wouldn't get too hung up on them, unless you're a serious collector buying MIB toys. Yes, this toy was re-released in 1984 under the Eternal Masterpiece Series and also under the Godaikin line (I forgot what year). But the toy is essentially the same. There's no reason to worry about edition.
However, don't get confused between this toy and the much more recent Bandai GD-17 toy. That toy is significantly different. Still a great toy (albeit prone to electrical malfunctions), but completely different from the vintage one.
