I voted keep the boxes. To your point though, if you don't feel like keeping the boxes, don't! Laziness or not, there's no reason to turn what space you and your family have into Hoarders: Otaku Edition! Personally, I tend to keep boxes to stuff like SIC, SOC Figma, GFF and Revoltech stuff. I actually have a desk area where I store stuff like revo joints and accessories and even som SIC and figma accessories. They're all pretty organized though so that just in case I need to sell I can repack them in their respective boxes. Yeah, I even keep my old Gunpla and plamo boxes. But I usually break some of the boxes down after time and store them. Most of my boxes are stored in other boxes out of sight or in closets. If you decide not to keep them and don't have any real hang ups about loosing that one aspect of your collectibles, I say go for it. Plus Cyrano had the great idea of recycling. Really can't get too much better than that. Sometimes I just imagine my MF and Kaiyodo boxes in a land fill somewhere in Holton, KS. I guess I'd rather keep them than see that happen.

Aiiight. Here's the deal (for a collector that values the actual COLLECTION ITSELF, instead of it's RE-SALE VALUE) :
In the struggle of COMPROMISE between Space-Saving & the ability to Pack it All Up at a moment's notice you have to make COMMON-SENSE decisions.
Those pieces that can survive an emergency move being piled atop each other UNSCATHED don't need boxes.
Those piece that would suffer some damage need their boxes.
Soooo......
Chogokins? Definitely need their boxes. Piling them on top of each other is asking for a crapload of scratches & missing accessories.
Plastic action figures & vinyl statues? Most of them don't need boxes. They can be taped down inside large boxes or crates, with newspapers or whatever stuffed between them, ect. The more fragile ones are of course the exception, but they're few & far between. Practically ALL Revoltechs & Figmas can be bunched into a huge pile whithin a single large box, I'm guessing. Although the UBER-Limited Revoltechs & Figmas should have their boxes preserved........just because, lol. (Yeah I do make irrational exceptions, hahah. )
It's all common sense, really. Or close. ;D
If you're in this hobby ENTIRELY for the RE-SALE VALUE.........then ignore my entire post. In fact ignore this entire messageboard & just become a f**king RETAILER already, lol. See you on Ebay, heh.
EDIT: Actually, now that I've given it more thought I think ALL vintage pieces should retain their boxes for the simple reason of historical importance. Yes, I do realize that TODAY's collector toys could POTENTIALLY be the vintage history of TOMORROW but you know......I'm just not feelin' that possibility. ;D Maybe i'm just a shortsighted dumbass, but it just doesn't SEEM LIKELY that in 2020 the cardboard window-box for my Burst Angel Meg figure or the Final Fantasy Cerberus-Bike will be as NOSTALGIC as those late 70's CHOGOKIN BOXES THAT SKETCHER JUST FLASHED A MINUTE AGO.......
Ahhh...who knows.
Basically, plan within your means & space.

i mostly keep them...ive learned my lesson from the past when i was still a kid. i didnt imagine that most of the 80's toys would re-incarnate in the 2000's era? besides i really like the art in those boxes, they would tell a story and they could even tell how far technology have gone thru since they first came out in terms of line types, color, and layout. but mostly i would keep my precious toy boxes like SOC or Macross boxes.

I think it is better to keep the boxes. It is better to keep the accessories inside the boxes even though you display the figure. The artwork on the Japanese boxes are much nicer than the US boxes.

Yeah the box art is really awesome on many of the boxes and I may keep those but really do we need to keep them all? I must admit many of the boxes made good stands as I used many to display my figures on..... but really I am just hording them at this point..... so I am going to give them away to the member here......... just gotta find a way to post them all without racking my brain lol

my advice is: really think about how you want to display your toys. with boxes, you can use it a s backdrop as a nice visual. I have found that with a collection of my size it is impractical to display toys outside of their boxes. Meaning, that the number of shelves I would need to house everything would make my place look like a law library with the stacks upon stacks and rows of stacks. It is impossible. If you rotate your collection then having boxes for the undisplayed portion might be a good storing device. I cannot display my collection so I keep everything in the boxes. It is easier for me to store everytrhing that way, even though the boxes do take up a lot of space, stacking to toys p actually takes less space tan if I werer to display.

I totally agree about keeping boxes, and its making my life a nightmare due to lack of space. But I just have to comment on this line of thinking. The toys from the 70s and 80s were just that - toys. That is why boxes are so precious and scarce these days. But the items released today are collectors items and they will not fare the same fate. This also sort of reminds me of comic books. By the time people started collecting them for future value, they were cranked out in huge numbers, and every kid in the world had the same thought. Myself included. I started buying multiples of specific issues (#1s, cross-overs, etc.). And now with the golden age of the internet, my collection is absolutely worthless. I'm not saying SOCs will be worthless, just that the thought that these will be rare in the future is not a viable thought - they were cranked out in huge numbers, and everyone is saving them, box and all. None will experience play wear (except for typical damage from defects, as discussed in another thread) or loss of boxes (well, for most).

The box art and Japanese letterings on them just WOW me, especially my Mazinger toys' boxes... I gaze at 'em and repeat to myself the chorus-ending of the MZ's closing theme song... Maaa Jing GAAAA! ;D Mazinger's kanji name is the coolest I've ever seen; I'd like to cast resin objects of his kanji name and use it as a decorative door plaque. zozo-Magengar
