I'm working on making a repro Kenner 1979 Alien Box. My original box is in pretty bad shape. My next step is to make some repro boxes to replace my Shogun Warrior boxes. The 3 Shogun boxes I have are in terrible shape. They should be easy to reproduce. I know some ppl hate on repro stuff but I don't care. It's hard enuff finding perfect boxes from the 70's. I have a couple of things in mind. One idea is to clean up the images in photoshop before I print them out. The Alien box is a test so I printed it out just to see if I could do it. It seems pretty easy. The Alien box is 31" X 34" so the printing is $50.00 not cheap. Anyway, feel free to post questions and comments. 1979 Kenner Alien with original box Working on the repro box. The next box I make I'm going to clean up the image and try and make the box look new. My old Shogun boxes (front)

Best to you on this Jason. It seems amazing that these used to be $12-15 toys back 30 years ago and how well they have lasted over the years.
While having an original box increases the value, I am not much of a box saver or collector myself. I like some of the new SOC stuff, but most is MIB and I would rather have loose. No excuse not to have it out of the box then, lol.

This one stands out cos the figure displays pretty awesome in the box.

I'm all for repros in any way shape or form. Nothing treats the eyes so candy-schwEEt like Japanese toy box art. I keep all the original boxes for my specimens, and fold them neatly in a box for storage... ...someday I might grow a wild hair up my aspiration to scan the box art and print out a nice 8.5x11 poster on a photo paper just to hang on my door or perhaps print it on a tshirt iron-on transfer. ;D Those large boxes there may take more work, but it can be done. Show them off when you're done! zozo-mag

I know a lot of collector's are partial to the original Japanese box art, but I dig the US stuff so much.

Great news and cannot wait to see what you come up with. I've wanted to make a few myself. Keep us updated... those tablets take a little to get used to (don't know if you've ever used one). So what's the idea for printing? You going to print to some thin high quality paper and spray mount it to some thin cardboard sheeting?
Oh and I'd kill for one of those 79 Kenner Aliens... Yours complete and working? Looks like it from the pictures. I am surprised that you annihilated the box for what is a decently high valued toy now-a-days...especially in a box!

I'm new at it but I'm working on it. You are correct on my plan for the boxes. I'm going to print it on high quality paper and spray mount it. The shogun boxes are really thin so I might try and spray mount one on a mat board as a test. They have them at Hobby Lobby for $7 or $8 each and are thicker than poster board. I would love to match the box up exactly but that's going to be hard to find a card board that's exactly like the original ones. Any tips from anyone are welcome. Yeah, my Alien is complete with dome, inner teeth and the 5th spike. I agree with you on breaking it down. It was a really hard decision to flatten the box out so I could scan it. It was like killing my 1st born (even tho I don't have kids ). My box has a lot of wear and bends. But I got big plans! The 1st idea is to make a repro box. Pretty plain and simple. My next idea is to print vinyl stickers of the box and make a collector case. Basically, a plexiglass box (the same size as the original box) with the stickers on the sides to make it look like a box. It will be blood red on the inside and have a light at the top (on the inside) to showcase the figure. That's the plan. But I have a lot going on so it's going to take time. I have 3 Jumbos on the way that need repro stickers. Next the Alien and Raydeen boxes and then the Alien case. All in good time, jason ;D

SchwEEt idea! A Jumbo Machinder Boxart "lamp" zozo-mag The lamp idea was for the Alien box. But you are right! A plexiglass box would be a cool way to store Shoguns. Maybe have just the main images for the box as stickers. So you could see though the box and see your Shogun.

You could have the back of the plexiglass box be the background art and then have the Jumbo in the box and then have the foreground art like the logo and stuff but make the negative space of the foreground art clear, like the yellow and stuff? I'm in.

Eyes will splatter against monitors all over the world when they see your new custom boxes! zozo-mag Thanks Magengar! Look out Robot Japan! Man, I got big things coming! This whole repro box project has been eating me up. I just don't have the time or patience to try and learn all the "ins and outs" of photoshop. Maybe I took the easy way out but I outsourced the photoshop work to a graphic designer. I paid to get the Alien Box image flawless. I should have it done in a few days. Also, I found someone to print the image on cardboard. I'm going to run some test after I get the image. If the Alien Box photoshop work turns out perfect and like new, I'm going to get them working on my Shogun boxes. If all goes as planned, I'll be able to repro the Shogun boxes just like the original! No spray mounting paper to a box. It should look just like the original from the 70's. Then I'll start on a custom case. But the repro boxes should be fun! Hell yeah! ;D

Just a quick suggestion for doing your repro boxes without having to unfold the original ones. You can take high res pict of each side and put them together in photoshop. Just take the good dimensions and be sure to have the same in your 2D file after. The good trick is to use a camera with a good zoom and try to zoom as much as possible and get the face in full frame, the more you zoom the less distortion you have and the more accurate it is.
I've done a few repro boxes of rare original Japanese Jumbos and it worked pretty good and didn't had to unfold and sacrifice the originals.
Of course you do like you want after, but I was a bit shocked with the sacrifice of the Alien box.

but I was a bit shocked with the sacrifice of the Alien box. My Alien box was in pretty bad shape. But I do see what you are saying. I have zero photoshop skills so I hired a guy on odesk to correct all the creses. I should have my final image back today.
