I'm not sure if this question has been raised here (if it has just ignore this ) I'm just curious what people think. As we all know many of the most famous Generation 1 Transformers designs came from Diaclone, Microman, Toybox, Beetra etc. If you exclude these then there is not much left...what do you think is the best original TF design? I would have to say: Scorponok / Black Zarak. Ok he's not the most impressive feat of engineering but a giant robot scorpion base with an evil destron dictator as a head is pretty cool!

I have to say Metroplex is my favorite, he looks great in all modes but his robot mode has great proportions plus he has some decent articulation too.

I've always liked Shockwave. Whereas Megatron made a cool gun, but a strange looking robot (he kinda looks like he has a boner). Shockwave was a cool futuristic looking gun (pop up sight and all) and a sweet looking robot. Translucent purple plastic never looked so good.

Shockwave is a cool Transformer but he's not an original Transformer design, he was produced by ToyCo and was originaly named Astro Magnum. But yeah, he was a badass Decepticon and way more impressive than the Megatron figure.

Metroplex was designed for Diaclone, but never produced as such. Rumor has it that Fortress Maximus was too. I don't know about Scorpanok.
I suspect Powermaster Optimus Prime/ God Ginrai was also an unproduced Diaclone but, if he wasn't, that would probably be my favorite TF design.

If Metroplex was a designed for Diaclone does that mean all the Scramble City Combiner groups were designed for Diaclone too? Or was Metroplex modified so he could connect to those groups when he became a Transformer.

I'm honestly not sure. Unfortunately, there aren't many primary sources relating to unproduced Diaclone designs on the net. I've heard rumors claiming that everything up to and including Powermasters and Targetmasters was designed to be a part of Diaclone, but I don't buy it. Metroplex, Fortress Maximus, and Powermaster Prime's base/ trailer in particular seem to have been designed to suit the Diaclone driver scale. In fact, the little plastic divider on the side of Prime's grey guns is in exactly the right place to create a partition allowing space for two Diaclone drivers to sit there in base mode. Beyond these pieces of info your guess is as good as mine. The most reliable rumors I've heard are that Metroplex was designed for Diaclone and that Fortress Maximus was at least designed by the same guy that designed Diaclone Fortress X.

Thats interesting about Metroplex and co. being potential Diaclone designs...I've never heard that before!
(On a side note...has anyone ever seen the original Toybox Sky Lynx...got a feeling this must be almost impossible to find)

They don't make 'em like that any more... Ginrai/Powermaster Prime's trailer gun things have an actual seat for a Diaclone driver... I think I like the original Car Autobots best - reasonable robots, reasonable cars, and nice transformations. Unlike many of the later ones which looked like robots with cars on their backs.

Cybermutton, I agree with you too on the Cars being the best version. I believe Series 1,2, and some of 3 are the best Transformers from Gen.1.

Yes, the '84/ '85 cars are my favorites too. I specifically like the klunkier, earlier designs (even though neither Dialcone nor Transformers released them first). Wheeljack and Sunstreaker rule my little world.

Yup, once they started to get away from actual car designs and into the more futeristic cars is when I started to lose interest (around the time of the Movie). They no longer became "Robots in Disguise" and they pretty much stayed that way till the Alternators/Binaltech line came out, same thing for Beast Wars once they became transmetal it kinda lost something.

Wheeljack and Sunstreaker rule my little world. Are you suggesting there is something else I dont know about Transformers Who did release Wheeljack / Sunstreaker first? Certainly the first few seaons of TF's were easily the best in the U.K / U.S until it descended into Action Masters / Super Mega Deluxe Pretenders but Japan was spoiled with quality TF's well after the movie. I don't know much about Alternators / Binaltech but they do look pretty cool.

Wheeljack and Sunstreaker were Diaclone figures first, infact there's another version of Wheeljack with a completely different head sculpt and colour and sticker scheme. Sunstreaker came in a whole bunch of different colours, I'm not sure but he came in red, blue, and I think there was a black and police version too.
Update: No black version of Sunstreaker.

Are you suggesting there is something else I dont know about Transformers Who did release Wheeljack / Sunstreaker first? Evidence suggests that Wheeljack and Sunstreaker were two of the earlier car robots designed by Takara for Diaclone, though they were not among the first released. I explain it all here: spacebridge2000.tripod.com/diaclone/history14.htmlWhheljack and Sunstreaker were Diaclone figures first, infact there's another version of Wheeljack with a completely different head sculpt and colour and sticker scheme. Sunstreaker came in a whole bunch of different colours, I'm not sure but he came in red, blue, and I think there was a black and police version too. Wheeljack had two seperate head molds, as well as a "Marlboro" racing version. Sunstreaker originally came in red as opposed to yellow, and also had a white and black police version. I'm not sure I recall a blue version, though. Are you thinking of Trailbreaker?

Yeah, your right I don't know why I keep thinking there was a blue Countach. Maybe there was a blue version of Sideswipe in the Transformers line and I got confused.

No wait I figured it out, I was thinking of the black Sideswipe and the blue Trailbreaker, man I need coffee this morning.
