this afternoon my buddy brought over his recent ebay score, which is a 3rd gen great mazinga. the ship in the head was folded and crumpled, as was the left side of the head, and a dent in the chest. you could see the outline of the box that sat on top of him for years.
ive read here on RJ a lot of fixes and i thought id give my buddys gm and my own u5 garada "the treatment."
i am sure this has been posted up here before, but i havet seen a recent post talking about how to un-dent your jumbos and restore original shapes.
my garada has the common problem of the dent on the top of his head.
i filled my wok with water and brought it to a boil.
my buddy was getting cold feet and i had to tell him id get him another 3rd gen gm if i melted it.
i dipped the head into boiling water for about 2 seconds, getting it hot enough to reshape. i simply had to guide the basic lines back to original form and i dipped it again for about 2 seconds, and then under cold water in the sink.
i poured some of the boiling water into the sickle inserts of garadas head and held him upside down for 30 seconds and ran him under cold water.
both jumbos look great. no paint came off and the shapes did not distort. within just a few seconds i had the original shapes back.
i am sure that you could distort vinyl heads with too much heat, but the good thing about water is that you can cool it down right away if you need to.
i tried the chopstick and blow dryer trick on garada and it left little dent marks from where the chopstick was pushing. water also offers the option of more surface coverage, rather than focusing on one small area.
anyone who has a lot of pvc toys should know this trick. both of my NECA aliens needed this treatment on the legs, also.
