This figure arrived from a YJ auction a couple weeks ago... The person selling it listed it as "Junk" and based upon the condition he wasn't too far off. Aside from the dirt, discoloration and staining, someone had torn off the horn on the right side of the head and apparently took a bite out of the front right side of the crown. However the figure was cheap and I like a challenge.. I made a mold from the left horn and recast the missing one directly onto the figure and then made a mold from the back side of the crown to cast a partial replacement for the damaged section on the front. After a little creative scuplting, sanding and painting... (Along with a LOT of cleaning) I still need to make a new hover pilder for him and a belt decal but he is getting much closer to where I want him to be.

Nice head fix. It is amazing how many of the the YJP auction "junk" bots have been laying outside for how many years and still clean up pretty good.

Dang man thats looking sweet you got some skills. What is good to clean these guys up without hurting them to make them shine like new? Mostly I just used hot water and dish soap along with some help from a pink scrubbie pad and goo gone ( a citrus based cleaner) where needed on this guy.

Nice head fix. It is amazing how many of the the YJP auction "junk" bots have been laying outside for how many years and still clean up pretty good. Thanks. The part that took me a while was that I had to cast the mold for the replacement section of the crown three times before I had something that I could cut down and work with. And I am very grateful to all the sellers of those dirty "junk bots on YJ. I wouldn't have a third of my collection without those auctions. I am also grateful that they were made out of a material back in the 70's that takes literally hundreds of years to break down. Jumbos may not be environmentally friendly but they do hold up well when compared to other toys from that era. Although I do wonder sometimes just where these things have been for all of these years that they end up in the conditions that they are sold in.

Maybe some sellers are going to the landfills and digging them up Would seem odd that someone would keep a poor grimy toy around for a long time, but you never know.

I went ahead and made a belt decal for the figure.. I had to hunt all over the web for decent photos of Mazinger Z to try to build this from and what I found out was that there are two distinct versions of the decal. The original that Popy produced in the 70's which came with a slightly off-center, oversized logo and a smaller, better centered design that came on the U5 Remake in 2000. Normally I would have gone for the more aesthetically correct version but since this is an original Popy I went ahead and recreated the oversized original decal for it. I'll see if I can take a better picture of it tomorrow when the sun is out and I can get some decent light in my workshop.

Great job on the restoration! I think you made the right call by going with the original Popy look for the belt sticker. Keep up the good work, and we all look forward to the next update. Merry Christmas!

Luclin999,
I am very impressed with your work. Between this Mazinger and your Mattel Grendy, you have resurrected two jumbos from certain death. What are your plans for the Jet pilder?
Keep up updated on your progress!

After a lot more work than I expected that it would be... The missing pildar.. I had ~part~ of an original pildar to work with but had to basically sculpt a new one using the piece that I had (plus a lot of photos I found on the internet) as a template for the new one. Unfortunately, this pildar turned out a bit too dark of a shade of red, so I will have to tinker with the "recipe" for the next one but since this is the first attempt I am pretty happy with the result. Now I just have to make pildar repro decals and once I get the color balance right the Mazinger Z restoration will be complete.

Decided since I was doing this as a custom piece anyhow that I might as well see about making this variant.. The white version of the pildar kind of like the one shown in the Mazinkizer OVA series. The decals are still rough and need to be cleaned up (and I need to reproduce the one for the tail section) but I am pretty happy with the test version of this and am definitely going to be making both a traditional red and an "OVA style" white pildar for this figure.

Don't forget he also had a Jet Pilder, too. Damn, that Popy Mazinger would be the first to have all its Pilders. It's turning out awesome! zozo-mag
