Picked this up a while back and finally had the time to fix some of its shortcomings.. As you can see it had the usual issues of overpowered springs which prevented the arms from staying locked in place for more than a few seconds at a time and the ridiculous decals (but it did come with the wings so that is one thing I was happy for). So, I went ahead and cleaned it up, removed the decals, added sandbags to the feet to improve stability and put together a decal set for it that works out pretty well. I also removed the springs from the arms and "fixed" them. Basically I took the existing springs (one at a time) and compressed them by a little over one third in a vise clamp. I then heated the springs with a propane torch for about 10-12 seconds and immediately doused them with cold water. This re-tempering adjusted the tension down to roughly equal to that of the Popy springs (and removed most of the rust in the process). After that, I reassembled the arms and they were good to go. No more "premature" launches here.

Looks great.
I am finishing up a set of Popy D17 decals for mine as well. Sure wish mine had come with the wing... Darn!
Gonna repaint the head to match the Popy version?

Someone should make a mold of the wings. They could make a killing selling to all of us that bought a disco D17. ;D Just a thought.

Looks fantastic! I think painting the head, as Will said, is a must. I second truecruds calling for the wings.

I do plan to repaint the head but it will probably be a while before I get to it.
And yes, I can make molds from the wings and cast repros from them.
I just need a little time to get it done and to see just how much "after casting" flash clean up will be required for each set.

I would be interested in a set of wings. I already have the decals for it.

Me too, with the wings! Sign me up!
Also, Luclin999 -- could you elaborate on how you added sandbags to your D-17's feet? Did you cut them open, or...?

There are screws on the bottom of the feet. If you remove them, the feet will then come off of the jumbo.

Question: why is it called "disco"? Was it ever on Soul Train? Just kidding, I'm curious as to why it's called disco.
That looks really awesome how you touched him up.
And, I like your method of re-tension for the springs... ...I ought to try that on my mattress springs so I don't get prematurely catapulted through the ceiling at night. ;D

Just speculating here but..
It was released in the late 70's when disco was popular and so the association was likely made between the flashier appearance of the decals on the toy to the overdone decorating/clothing/hair styles which were common in the disco movement.

It looks great...when I get another one, hopefully you'll have the wing mold done....the one I sold was changed over to the popy style, custom painted head and all, I even added the sand bags, in the feet, the only issue I had with that was, when my kids would play with him, his feet kept falling down, but he did stand better !!!
