Ikea, Craigslist, or an antique store would be the best bet. I am shopping for one too right now. Found a nice one thats lighted where I live on Craigslist that may fit all of my Godaikins, only for $50.

Also, any advice on the kind of display case I get? Wood vs metal, lighting etc

I would recommend putting your own LED lights in. Most cases don't come with LED, they come with halogen or traditional incandescent lights which don't make a lot of light but instead make a lot of heat which can damage, discolor, or melt your toys.
Wood or metal is your choice - it depends on what finish and color you want to go with the room your cases will be in. Most important thing is get a case with lots of glass for viewing with the least obstructions.

I have seen both in person. I would say the detolf unless you look at the other one in person. They are a little different. The second one is metal, iirc. I don't know how much space there is between the shelves on the second one (less I believe), but it is nice that the bottom shelf in that case is above ground level.

You can try calling your local furniture stores and see if they have damaged display cabinets. I got mine for $100, but I had to completely re-glue one of the doors and rig up a new hinge. Still, it was a total bargain.

buy used, used, used, used and local. My experience is that used curios will sell about 40% of retail. If you are flush with cash, then have a local build custom. Ikea cabs are good if you have a g.f. and want to keep a low profile -or if just starting. E

E This is true but I now have 5 Ikea detolfs and Im gonna need at least 3 more in the next year.they are already crammed.Im thinking of getting something custom too.after awhile you just need too many.

A couple of thing I would mention in cases that I'm not a fan of...
Mirrored backs. This seems cool at first, but it makes for a visually messy display.
Etched glass. Same as above. The designs distort the view of the actual items inside the cabinet.
Unfortunately my bigger display case has both of these, and though it makes the case itself seem nicer when nothing is in it, it makes for a messy display, and the more crowded it is, the worse these features are.

Yes, no frosted or etched glass. Get as much clear glass as possible, on as many sides as possible (if case is in open room or in the middle of the floor. For bookshelf style cases, you can get away with front glass only, and try to get full glass doors or doors with little to no center borders/frames.
I do think mirrored shelves can be both a positive and a negative. If your case is packed with a ton of stuff they will look terrible and overcrowded with the mirrors.
If you have a decent or smaller amount of stuff, sometimes the mirrors add a nice touch because the figures still have some space between them and you can catch some different viewing angles.

Thanks guys. I think the ikea detolf should work well for my first ever display case. Inexpensive and simple

If you know anyone who's handy, do what I did. (Unless you need to stay smallish). Go to Lowes and pick up a set of shower doors that has an open box, special order return, clearance, etc... Makes a great face for a built in. Mine is holding 18 Jumbo's, 38 die casts, autographed comics, & 9 model kits. With paint, wood, and glass, I only have about $150 in it.
