Depends. Sometimes price in Japan will be lower but shipping cost will be very high. In US, price is usually higher and shipping is usually less.
When comparing the two, sometimes you find savings. Some overseas sellers or retailers do not offer return policies though or sometimes you have to ship the item back at your expense ($$$) of the retailer is not large enough to carry the burden of international return shipping.

I'm a newbie here. I was wondering what's the difference by ordering from Japanese online stores and Amazon? I see Amazon is selling the same product. Thank you! Welcome, smokinace! If the product is sold by Amazon for a reasonable price, then go for it. If you have Amazon Prime, even better. If the product is sold by a third party seller with 100% positive feedback at a reasonable price, and the product is fulfilled by Amazon, then go for it. If the product is sold by a third party seller with 100% positive feedback at a reasonable price, but the product is not fulfilled by Amazon, then be careful and order at your own risk. Otherwise, Amazon is not recommended and you are much better off going with a reputable Japanese online store such as Anime Export, Amiami, etc., and paying extra for EMS shipping. Amazon third party sellers might be in Japan, China, Russia, etc. You might get ripped off, or at best the product will take a very very long time to arrive, sometimes with no tracking number. If you must return the product, you will probably pay return international shipping. This doesn't mean you won't find good third party sellers at Amazon, but I personally consider it a risk. I myself have had bad experiences. I hope this helps.

Thank you everyone for the response. There is third party seller based in Japan (100% feedback) and the product is fulfilled by Amazon listed at $248 plus free shipping. Is that a good price for this 40th anniversary version?
What is considered a reasonable price for this piece? If I order from Japanese online store, do they charge import fee or tax to US?
Thanks again!

Fulfilled by Amazon may mean that the item is already in the U.S. at an Amazon warehouse. It would be less costly to ship to you, but I'm not sure if returns would go direct through Amazon or the third party. Hopefully someone will clarify.
Price doesn't sound bad but the figure was just re-released (and sold out again I believe) so the higher prices from before have come down a bit.
As far as taxes or import fees from international sellers, no, they should not charge you any and they normally do not.

Thanks again! I've seen it listed on Japanese online stores for around $178 USD plus $30 or so USD for EMS shipping to the USA. That's about $208 USD give or take. So $248 USD with no sales tax and Free Amazon Prime shipping seems reasonable to me. There shouldn't be any additional costs to you if fulfilled by Amazon.

If it's fulfilled by Amazon then returns are to and through Amazon, and refunds happen as soon as you drop it at UPS. If it is not fulfilled by Amazon you have to send it direct to the seller and Amazon only gets involved if there is a dispute.

Do you mind sending me the links which online stores that selling it for that price? or you can PM me the links.
I checked on Anime Export and Amiami. Both are sold out.
I've noticed that Amazon listed November 15 as the released date. So this one is the reissue?

It's already sold out at the Japanese online stores I was referring to, but the price they sold it for is still listed. I only mentioned the prices there for comparison to give you an idea of whether or not the Amazon price was reasonable. In my opinion, and if it were me, I'd hurry and buy it from that Amazon seller before someone else does. Good luck to you!

Yet another plus with buying from Amazon, you don't pay until the item is shipped. So you can order now, then cancel if you find a better deal elsewhere, though I doubt you will at this point.

I already did pre-order through Amazon. It's a little bit cheaper and easier to return if there is a problem with the product.
