I've been inactive for a while now due to being overly busy with my primary business however for the longest time I have been wanting to make this piece.
As some of you may know, I have verbally raked Mattel over the coals in several threads for how badly they watered down the Popy Jumbos which were sold to the American market. Mostly for the omission of pieces which were generally integral to the original toy and without which the toy seemed "incomplete" when compared to the figure in the cartoons. Reideen's Bowfist was probably the most notorious example of this "lack of a necessary part" in the Mattel releases. (I mean c'mon... Reideen WITHOUT his bow?!? Seriously?)
However Popy was technically also guilty of this from time to time especially on one Jumbo in particular.
Getter Liger.
A nice jumbo which comes with the "flower" missile launcher... and pretty much nothing else.
While virtually every other single version of the toy...
Comes with the Flower arm as well as the Drill arm which is conspicuous by its absence with this Jumbo.
Now we do have access (potentially) to the Drill arm that Popy produced with Getter 2...
...However to me at least, even taking into consideration the "style" of the Popy jumbos, this arm really does not "look" right for Getter Liger.
So I went ahead and made one myself..
In making this piece I tried to stay true to the "jumbo style" in making the drill a bit shorter than what is shown in the cartoon and blunted in the manner that I would imagine that Popy would have done if they had actually produced this for the figure originally.
I did choose to give it a silver/metallic paint application though as I couldn't bear to take it ~too~ far from the source material. Personally I think it looks like it was supposed to be made for the toy.
The one pictured is my original prototype drill which I made and then attached to a casting I made from the Liger fist cuff so that it would be as removable as an original piece.
My next step will be to clean up a few small rough areas on the prototype and then make a mold of it to cast the entire arm as one piece.
What do you guys think of it?
