Good to hear - we will be going there on December as well, phew, God bless Japan, and also we had an earthquake here in NZ as well....please include those who got affected in your prayers. Any word for the official release date for our dear SoC Voltron?

Hey everyone, new member here. I'm mainly a TF collector, but am also a fan of Voltron. Got some newbie questions related to the figure I was hoping someone could help answer.
1) My understanding is that this is the official and "definitive" version of Voltron. But I noticed Toynami also makes Voltron figures, which I believe are official. So 2 separate companies make different official masterpiece quality figures? I'm just confused by this because it doesn't seem geographic, like Hasbro/Takara. 2) I missed out on the Japanese preorders, and am not familiar with ordering from Japan anyway. I see that the figure is still available from a domestic retailer for $279.99. Is this considered a good price? I think someone on this board previously mentioned that the Japanese retailers will likely get additional stock when it arrives. Curious if that price + shipping will be less than $279.99.
Thanks in advance guys!

Forget about the Toynami. It's a plastic figure and it's sculpt is heavily stylized. Though it is much larger at 16 inches or so.
If you want Voltron that you remember as a kid. Go for the SOC. You will relearn the word quality with the SOC. TF masterpiece is nice but SOC sets the benchmark for high end toys. The mold will be crisp and the paint will be clean. It will have enough diecast to be heavy but not enough to limit its fun factor.
Toynami has had the US license for Voltron for a long time but has never made a decent Voltron unless you count the 10 year old Masterpiece Voltron, which is clunky and so outdated. Bandai has been wanting to add Voltron to its SOC lineup and finally got the license this year. The SOC is what collectors have been waiting for for many many years.
I expect the new Toynami Voltron EX to be another subpar quality product if their past track record is any indication.
Your price is good. Shipping from Japan will be on the order of $50 so it will be around $300 shipped from Japanese retailers if you can find one. Where did you find that price?

Welcome to the forum nycprimeAs far as we know, all released toy are officials. There may be bootleg product from NoName company, but reputable company like Bandai, Toynami, Aoshima, Fewture, etc. will only release official product. They must have approbation for the released product from the company holding the right to Voltron. What will they release is now purely an artistic choice. A classic line like Bandai, or a beefed up version like Toynami EX line. Ans soon to come a new line from the cartoon at Netflix. For ordering, Bandai product are now available anywhere in the world. Buying from Japan is mostly cheaper, even with the shipping. The MSRP is 299.99$ US, so anything cheaper than that is good. It's around 270$ US in Japan. And I doubt there will be shortage for this product.

Thanks in advance guys! Hi nycprime and welcome aboard! Others here can probably add more detailed answers but here's my take: 1) World Events Productions is the owner of the Voltron brand and has licensed it to both Bandai and Toynami to create their versions of Voltron. So in that sense, they're both official. I guess kinda like how ThreeA and Prime1Studio are able to make non-transforming transformers because they got a license from Hasbro/Takara. As far as "definitive" goes, I don't think they're marketing it as such and is probably more a subjective thing. Bandai did design it to stick close to the original toy/animation look (with varying degrees of success depending on who you ask) while Toynami went for a reimagined look. 2) $279 is a pretty good price. If you can get cheap or free shipping then it's even better! I think some of the Japanese retailers' prices fall around $250 but I'm expecting shipping would be around $40 and up so you might be better off getting domestic. There might cheaper places the others here can recommend. Another plus for domestic though is you will get an extra Voltron branded sleeve that goes over the box. The Japanese version only comes in a GoLion branded box. You just have to make sure the seller is selling the US version. Hope this helps!

Welcome nycprime. Here's a quick rundown. Both Bandai and Toynami are Official licensors. So product is "official" and WEP the IP owners gives approval and gets paid.
Toynami has had the Voltron license for many many years. Their "Masterpiece Voltron" is a nice die cast, and has largely been the best available up until recently. It is however an almost 20 year old design, that they have repackaged and re-issued three times, including 20th and 30th anniversary additions. It's nice, but not up to modern standards.
Toynami's new EX Voltron is an over priced all plastic offering. It is more an unofficial stylized modern concept Voltron. It looks like a nice plastic figure, it just doesn't really match any of the source materials.
Bandai and its subsidiary Popy created the original DX GoLion toys back in the day, which were also packaged as the Matchbox Voltron. Bandai has recently re-acquired the Voltron license and is releasing a new state of the art Die Cast version in their upper end Soul of Chogokin line. This version is the closest to the TV version, with some things, such as the exposed Lion legs, taken from the classic DX toy. It looks like it will be the best Official Voltron by a wide margin.
If you can get a Toynami Masterpiece at a good price it's nice to have. But don't go much above $100-120. Of those the 30th anniversary is best as it has some extra weapons, a nice display base and light up eyes. The figure is really meant for display. It can be fragile if extensively played with. The Chrome legs get scuffed scratched and damaged easily.
The Bandai SOC is $300 and looks to be the same exceptional quality as their other SOC combiners such as GAO Gai Gar, God Sigma, God Mars, Voltes V, Combatler V, etc. it has all the weapons and accessories a nice display base for said accessories and a ton of features, plus if cared for it will retain resale value.
The Toynami EX plastic Voltron, honestly is so far overpriced that it seems targeted to fail. $400-500? Yeah no. I understand that it is designed by a subcontractor, but Toynami has such a poor history with plastic robots from their Robotech license that they need to be viewed with skepticism. Wait for someone else to get this in hand and tell about it. Then wait for it to go on clearance. Deep clearance.
There is also the "unofficial" (bootleg) Mad Toys King of Beasts. Which is a nice stylized modern take on Voltron, with a ton of die cast. It's hard to come by, the new version may or may not ever release, if you do find one buying it is like a drug deal behind the bowling alley, and as a bootleg QC may be spotty. But it is a nice figure.
The other nice or complimentary bootleg is the Miracle Metals Vehicle Voltron. Which is now real hard to find. Ver 1 of that is a QC horror show. Ver 2 and 3 fixed the problems and are fairly nice.

Shipping a large heavy item will not be cheap .

hello nycprime and welcome to RJ, i will give you the bottom line 1)forget about Toynami their quality isn't half as good as Bandai, and you are right Bandai Voltron is is expected to be the best Voltron ever made in term of engineering accessories and quality 2) its depend on your location for me im in Asia so its better for me to buy from Japaneses stores, and don't worry if you missed the preorder im sure there will be alot when the figure is released worth to mention there is a really good unofficial release by Mad Toys its considered the best Voltron so far (until we get the SOC to compare them) but its very hard to get and the fate of the official version is unknown, my advice for you is to stick with Bandai SOC and you wont regret it
