Gurren Lagann & GGG (& GGG Final especially) are must watch newer shows that is the most hotblood and lots of feel. Manly tears man. Shin Getter Robo Armaggedon is close. Less feel, but focus more on cool factor. Interesting remake with a mysterious twist, though animation quality drops a bit in some of the middle episodes. Ideon is awesome old school show. Odd looking alien mechs, orange afro, 80's space fashion doesn't stop the it from making you watching an epic war movie. Try to find the 2 movies instead of the TV show. The movie has the real ending of the series. Gunbuster, a ground break super robot show of its time. Its sequel Diebuster feels very different, but not a bad follow up that ties up nicely at the end. Votoms the original TV series, and all the OVAs from 80s & 90s. Awesome premise of Perfect Soldier and a very interesting gritty world. The cool mechs are just icing on the cake. Gundam, Gundam 0080, Gundam Unicorn. Best picks of old and new UC Gundam series. These would be my top picks I can think of at the moment, aside the popular others or stuff already mentioned. Many older shows are iconic, but not as great watching them now. Not because the animation is old, but the pacing and storytelling of some of these shows didn't age gracefully. Guilty pleasure: Godannar. This show has fan service and bouncing jokes enough to make you feel embarrassed watching it in front of your lady or parents. But that aside, it actually has a pretty good old-school super robot story hidden behind all the façade. Godannar itself is pretty kickass, that flaming hair, man! I too have a hard time following Shin Mazinger Z. Very disjointed. Couldn't continue after 2 episodes, regardless I like the original, own some of the movies, and enjoyed some of the Mazinkaiser OVAs. Shin Getter Robo Armaggedon largely left me the same place as Shin Mazinger Z did you guys. Plus I tried to watch it with some strange green haired chick show that made no sense? Getterman? BetterMan? something like that?

Among other things already mentioned, I really like first gundam (0079) and my brother is a huge fan of Gundam 0083/Side Story.
I'll add some more later.

Thanks so much! This is a great list to start with. I loved Robotech back in the day- saw all the episodes and used to role play it. I had no idea it was on Netflix. Robotech is definitely on Netflix. The only downside is it looks awful. Sadly because of the never ending legal disputes between Harmony Gold and the Japanese Studios while HG owns Robotech in North America, for some reason they are not allowed to remaster it up to high def. So it's 480p 3:4 aspect ratio. And the title text is fuzzy. I cry when I see how good the updated and remastered Macross looks.

I'm not sure I can pain myself to watch such a good series in bad quality. I'm still catching up on the Clone Wars for now

It just didn't get the HD remastering that Macross got. It's watchable. Just it shows its age.

Among other things already mentioned, I really like first gundam (0079) and my brother is a huge fan of Gundam 0083/Side Story. I'll add some more later. The three fairly short side stories to MSG (Gundam 0079) are fantastic. Gundam 0080, Gundam 0083 and Mobile Suit Gundam 8th MS Team. They are each wonderful for wildly different reasons. 0080 is a more SciFi story with characters and ethics and moral questions. Even the annoying kid becomes tolerable. 0083 is almost a MAcross style story with test pilots and new tech. 8th MS Team is my favorite with the Ground Grunts in the Jungle. Each is only 4 or 6 episodes long I think (8th MS team might be 10 or 12?) So nice short watch.

Actually, I have to correct myself - 08th MS Team is my brother's favorite. It's a great, short series to watch.

Sorry I'm late to the party, and I'm not sure if I'm still on topic anymore. But, I wanted to address the subject of new collectors.
I've gotten away from Facebook because the political posts drive me bonkers. So, I spend time on Google+. It's actually a cool place to display a collection, and there are communities tailored to all interests. My wife works in education, and I mentioned to her that there were a surprising amount of young people on the service. She informed me that many high schoolers aren't allowed on Facebook, but they all have Google accounts.
There is a very popular "Mecha" community. (It has more members than Voltron's does). It's devoted to both Super and Real Robots. In a recent poll, the members actually prefer Super Robots to Real Robots 58% to 42%. These kids are really into it! Images and clips of the Mazingers, Getters, Grendizer and other classic SRs are a mainstay. Also, modern variants such as Gurren Lagann are popular. These kids are classic Anime and Kaiju fanatics. Their depth and breadth of knowledge is startling - recently there was a post comparing and contrasting the Space Emperor God Sigma and Taio Sentai Sun Vulcan shows.
I contribute collection pics a couple times a week - and they're a huge hit! My recent EX Gokin Mazinger 1969 photo has more likes than anything on the board; my DX Great Mazinger shoot is a close second. These kids can't afford $300+ Gokins right now... but I'm planting a seed. Some do have the budget for SRCs, and they have started putting up action shots. It's really cool to see.
So, I do think there is a future for our hobby. It's always been a niche in the USA, and probably always will be... but, it's a niche that will survive.

Good to know that coletron! Glad the younger generation are slowly getting into it. Would be great if the japanese production firms reboot a number of the super robot animes. That way, the brain washing will be complete heh heh

First post here...I'm 39 years old now, and have collected numerous anime/mecha things over the years. Enthusiasm for stuff like this can drop off when you add a wife, kids, full time work, etc. into the equation. But I recently read Ready Player One, and I forgot how much I enjoyed anime/mecha when I was younger. Now I'm watching Grendizer all over again, and looking to buy this really nice stuff that has been released while I was on "hiatus," that I never could've afforded when I was a kid. I think new collectors, as well as those returning to the fold, will only help this hobby continue to grow. Now I have to get up into the attic and dust off my old toys...

Welcome aboard! How are you watching Grendizer if I may ask? Is there a decent Japanese language/English Sub out there anywhere? I'd love to revisit it myself.

One of my friends bought a set from eBay a long time ago, and I'm borrowing it. The quality leaves a lot to be desired, but it's good enough!

Can you post a pic of the DVD cover? I may be familiar with the version you borrowed and can find out if it is still available.

I'd gladly post it, but all I have are 12 DVD's in clear plastic sleeves. I'm looking at eBay now, and I see a bunch of different covers. No idea if they're similar to what he has.
