So I wanted to find out how tall SoC Gipsy Danger and Robot Damashii Gipsy Avengers are. I assumed they’re using a standard Tamashii Stage Act 4 for the Gipsy Avenger so I could probably use that as a base to measure from. I found a video of the Act 4 stand with a Marvel Legends Ultimate Spider-Man on it that I was able to superimpose on the RD and from there was able to come up with some rough measurements. The Spidey figure stands just below 6inches/15cm. - The RD Gipsy Avengers, at around 7inches, looks to be the tallest RD I’ve seen. The NECA Jaegers were also about 7inches so it looks like they’re trying to be comparable to NECAs. Makes sense as they probably don't want to be criticized for being smaller than what's come before. - At more than 10inches, GX-77 Gipsy is pretty sizable. Also, isn't that the same height as GX-71 Voltron?

I sure hope you are right about Gipsy Danger's height. At 25cm is a very good size of a non-combiner.
All these figure talk makes me wanna rewatch the movie. I didn't love it back then as I find the story generic and wooden acting. But the robot actions are very enjoyable. Wonder if a rewatch and making-of's will change my mind a bit, as I can look into the movie a little deeper. Still want the SOC regardless.

As I have mentioned I am more of a Striker Eureka sort of person but this is really nice. I wonder how amazing the construction will be and how poseable it is.
I do hope it comes with a healthy set of accessories that has been mostly missing from SoCs of late.

I really enjoyed the movie when it came out. Some story elements did not make sense, but overall it was a really fun action movie with giant robots!
As for the figure. I think I'm definitely going to grab one.

I have a fundamental problem with the design of gypsy danger ! The movie was a great fun ! It is a tribute clearly to the super robots genre. But the problem is the design of the robots! Look at gypsy, he feels like one of the many different upgrades to Iron man suite! Can be called MK 77 sergeant cobalt all blue ! For super robots to be considered as one design wise it needs to be very unique! A one of a kind ! Otherwise the design will fall in the either real robot category or the mobile suite. Of course this is my opinion but I don't want to see a SOC Iron Man or robocop after this.

Of course this is my opinion but I don't want to see a SOC Iron Man or robocop after this. I don't see every humanoid with a circle on the chest as an Ironman design, but I see where you are coming from. I wasn't a fan of the design before I saw the movie. Slightly generic and not all that cool visually, but has some old school charm (bucket head, wide blocky shoulders, odd shapes on limbs, flaps on shoes, and a jet engine on the chest). Didn't get any toys of it, but thought it worked in the movie. Now that I have slowly warmed up to it to want the SOC, the new ones in the upcoming movie made them even more sleek and generic, and lost all the old school touches I like. That, I feel similar to what you feel towards Gipsy Danger, but to Gipsy Avenger instead. Just give that thing a smaller round shoulders and a Ironman helmet, and it will indeed be an 'avenger', and a MK77 Sergeant Cobalt Blue at that.

Yeah, it is an awkard looking thing...it will never win a beauty contest nor does it out design the robots that inspired it. I am certainly not a fan of the designer who created Gypsy Danger, BUT the power of media slowly over came my "thats ugly." I will get one,
and i imho only but would like to see spectacularily better designed Ironman AND Robocop in SOC. I want to see how far and how much better Bandai can do better then Hot Toys. It is a direct challenge to Bandai SOC team. Also, id like to see Gypsy Danger from Hot Toys when ever they get the license. Competition is good....One of few things thats good about a free market.

Ultimately the reason you should buy this is because in the end it shows companies and especially movie ones that there's a market for movies like Pacific Rim. It's all about the merchandise thanks to the original Star Wars.

Just rewatched the movie with Guillermo Del Toro's commentary and the making-of featurettes. Gave me quite a bit of insights as to why the script was kept to its simplistic form, and all the visuals and color coding intended on many scenes that we normally don't see (but feel). At one point, he even when on ignoring what was on screen, and went on talking about Tsuburaya's Ultraman history, Gojira's film origin, Tetsujin 28 Go, & Mazinger Z, as well as the first generation suit actors in tokusatu films. Its a very interesting listen, and this guy is oozing love for old school giant robots and kaiju films that filled his childhood in the 60s & 70s. While I still think the script and acting didn't quite work for me as well as he intended (particularly for the 2 main leads Beckett & Mako), I understand what he tried to do and want to tell a simple story with minimal dialogue, but more with expressions and actions. Makes sense. Best actor IMHO however was the little Japanese girl that appeared in Mako's childhood flashback, whom turned out to be a child celebrity in Japan from my google search, named Mana Ashida, which was also one of Del Toro's favorite scenes in the movie. Also, while we saw some similarities or inspirations on the mech designs with stuff we know, Del Toro purposely not referencing in discussions and concept art development any particular known robots or kaijus from shows, movies, or anime so that they will look more unique. In a way, I think he achieved that to an extent.
A side note for us collectors. If you want higher end Pacific Rim kaijus that is in scale with this GX-77, you may want to hunt down the couple X-Plus vinyls (Leatherback & Knifehead in the 25cm scale line) before their prices skyrocket after the news of GX-77 is widely spread. Looks like Bandai is scaling their figure with these somehow.

I'm really excited for these. I loved the movie and bought the Neca figures, but man did they suck.

That was fast. Pre-order up on Amazon amzn.to/2uD4XWL $269.99. Robot Damashii Gipsy Avenger also up for $24! amzn.to/2uCOTUW The Gipsy Danger's dimensions are listed at 2x4x12 inches. That's a lot taller than I thought it would be. I wonder if that's accurate or just some placeholder. On the other end, Avenger's listed at 2x3x6. Smaller than I thought but looks to be taller than most RD? Again, not sure if accurate though.

The amazon pictures look great! Still probably a pass for me though. Who does Bandai think they are anyway? Sentinel??

Yeah.
Nice, but a bit too much in the pricing for a non-transforming/non-combining SOC.
Especially the current amzn po-pricing (US$269.99), where sales-tax will be an additional $20+ on it in my neck of the woods...
