I have never heard of the anime either. Actually, I though "The Big O" was something else entirely. I love this design though. Really crazy looking.

dont know the robot, and i dont like the design honestly It's worth hunting the show down. It's by the same animation team that did the Batman The Animated Series. It's kind of Bruce Wayne with a Giant Robot. With a touch of Art Deco Dieselpunk tone to it. It's a very distinct show. The first season is great. The second season gets kinda weird towards the end. But still a really worthwhile watch. Well animated and very striking. The robot design makes more sense in context and looks better in motion. But it's meant to be a bit different.

I have the max gokin, but have airways fancied the soc due to the add-ons. Looking forward to more. The Max Gokin is a nice piece of Gokin, but it gets everything above the nipple line wrong for the Robot. The Upper Chest and the Collar/Cockpit are supposed to be two separate parts that move individually. The way Max Gokin did it is shaped wrong and moves wrong, and doesn't really allow for the cockpit. The SOC gets that right, but doesn't have the Max Gokin's weight or finish. The SOC is actually one of the lighter SOC's, with most of the metal in the legs. I wish I had the add on set, but never been willing to pay $200-300 for it.

You sure its the same 'animation team' that animate Batman? Thought Big-O is a Sunrise (Japan) property. But I did remember hearing US help funded the 2nd season, maybe they helped out producing it too then.

It was Sunrise, but with a bunch of US investors, principally Cartoon Network (WB) I believe. Much of the art and animation was farmed out to the same Korean team that did Batman TAS. And as soon as you know that, it becomes really really obvious. It was clearly made by people who had gotten very used to working in that distinct Paul Dini/Bruce Tim art style. The second season was almost fully funded by CN.

the thing is and with all respect to Big Os fans
the robot doesn't give the super robot hero, the design give it the look of a powerful evil mech like a final boss or something lol
no offense guys

It has some elements of a Super Robot and some of a Real Robot. It's a big Iron war machine. Something out of H G Wells. It's look envisions Iron and Steam. The late Steam Industrial era. A Massive Engine or Locomotive. One of the contrasts of the show is the bad guy robots are often prettier and more colorful. It's a Film Noir Giant Robot show, with a very Film Noir Giant Robot. Try it, you will like it for how different it is. There is a reason Cartoon Network ran it back to back with Cowboy Bebop.

I think he looks like a hero mech to me. Subtle face with the heroic piston arms. I would say the Mazinger designs look evil to me. Especially Mazinkaiser with its horns, bat looking chest and jagged looking scrander. To me it exudes a vampiric like appearance. No offense! Lol

Just a cool design with some industrial steam punk vibe. As I watched the show, the Gothamesque style, the storytelling, and the music got me buying the DVDs. It was a very good show, with some mechs that reminiscent of Giant Robo. The ending is pretty trippy though.

Not quite Steampunk. Steampunk has a 1880's-90's vibe. Big O is Late Steam/Industrial 1910-1930'ish in terms of tone and tech. Steampunk to Dieselpunk transition. (and as I type that I realize I have never used even a variation on that historical phrase to describe Giant Robots)

Batman looks that way for a reason to intimidate and scare his villians and criminals. Big O was never meant to look scary. Mazinger is a demon? I don't know much about Mazinger, but I don't ever recall it being a demon. Anyhoo, but to the subject at hand can't wait for this release especially if it has the effect/add on parts!!! "It's show timeeee"!!!!!

I think it literally embodies the proportions that make Super Robots, particularly in still-art, Super Robots. His colors are definitely a more "grim" palette though, so I can see where you're coming from for sure, and then add things like the chains and I'm definitely seeing it. However, you need to familiarize yourself with the anime as well, because it's more of a dark setting in general to where the mecha fits much more than the more bright and Technicolor standard of a lot of antagonist mechs of the genre.
