Hi gang, my Soul of Chogokin Gx-94 Blackwing review is finally up. Please click on the image to jump to the review. Pretty decent yet pricey SOC release. Sadly, the combined form isn't all that one would hope it to be, mainly due to the Gx-13/R's design limitations. Gold

Great review! Thanks Gold! Glad I didn't pick it up since I only have the regular GX-13 and not being able to combine with it is absolute deal breaker. Maybe I'll finally open the sentinel one soon.....

Thanks guys. Yeah, the Blackwing itself connects onto Dancougar farily good enough, it's just too bad Bandai didn't add a fix for the heel issue on Final Dancougar and we all have to rely on the display base to stand him up post combination. A terrible call right there. Gold

Appreciate the review, and reaffirmed my decision on skipping this. While decent on its own, we all know the main reason why we buy a Blackwing for, and turned out the combination is a very 'duct tape' solution that you can't even combine without extra parts (or not at all like my original GX-13), nor can it stand on its own. And even if it can, the colors and combined visual is not that exciting to look at either. Worse thing is, this was developed after Sentinel's attempt, which shows that Bandai didn't care all that much on the combined form.
Looks like Sentinel still reign as the top Final Dancouga gokin in the market, with ThreeZero having potential to make a good/better one some years down the line. But with the current sculpt they showed at ACGHK Toy Show, I am not a big fan of the sculpt, the blue paint, especially the faces (seem like ThreeZero let this Kevin Sau in-house concept artist to helm a lot of their recent toy/mech designs). So it will be a while until they release a black/gray version with a Blackwing. And then we'll see who will come out on top as the best.

Great review gold! Thanks for addressing every detail. I still want it, but probably display it in its mecha form. Combining it make it just an expensive pair of wings. Agree with your comments on the color, and I can't believe the heels issue... come on bandai... I'll keep it in my list of socs to backtrack, but not as a priority (gx07I, gx10, gx61 and this one)

I'm so happy to have GX-94, GX-13, GX-13R (2004) and GX-13R (2017).
GX-13 is one of my all time favorite SOCs. I love its design.

So I finally decided to put out my GX-13R and GX-94 set that's been sitting in the corner of my office for like 3 months tonight. The GX-13R, as expect is pretty much exactly the same as the GX-13 (Which I removed from my cases to make room for this). The GX-94 Blackwing itself is pretty nice. It feels like a modern SoC. Lots of die cast in the right places, etc. The thing I find absolutely infuriating is the whole connection between Dancounga and Blackwing. I get it weighs a lot, and it needs the stand. I'm actually OK with that but the 2 posts they give you? They might as well not even be there. I spent like an hour messing around with it trying to get those and the 2 cannons to connect in any meaningful way. I finally just pushed Dancouga close to Blackwing on the stand as I could and put it in my case. Honestly you can't really tell the difference but they couldn't think of ANYTHING better? I would have been fine with like a cradle add on, or anything just to make it more secure. It does look pretty nice though, I will give it that. That said, the Sentinel Metamor Dancouga is much better engineered in terms of the connection between it and it's Blackwing. I'm still on the fence as to what figure I like better (also it's kind of unfair to compare the Dancouga's, the SoC came out in 2003 and the R has barely any changes at all). Anyways quick pic of the figure...
