I recently acquired a Great Robot Base that included five driver figures. This was one of the later 1982-3 releases that included the type 2 drivers. In this case, four of them were the red, yellow, blue, and green drivers from Fortress X. However, the fifth is the black Fortress X driver, but with Gold instead of silver chrome. Was this standard for later Great Robot Base releases, or is this some unusual curiosity? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

When I got my GRB MIB in 1983, they were all type 2 drivers but with silver chrome.

I suppose the other possibility is that the seller was mistaken and this didn't come with GRB, but this is the driver type with the completely uniform color body that I thought only came with Fortress X and later GRB releases. The seller outright told me he'd never owned a Fortress X.

My Fort X has all the regular single color drivers - Green, Black, Red, and Blue- but also one with black arms & legs and a yellow torso. These are all still sealed, so they're original...
My GRB had an assortment of drivers, but they weren't sealed, so I can't say which were originals...
My guess is that some just got mis-packed, or more likely, mislaid and mixed up in the last 20 years!
Cheers

My guess is that some just got mis-packed, or more likely, mislaid and mixed up in the last 20 years! Except Diaclone doesn't feature any other items that contain Gold chrome. This had to have been intentional, and the fact that its details aren't blurred and that it has a magnetic charge suggests that this isn't a knock-off that got mixed in.

Whatever the case may be, you should count yourself lucky! I know a lot of TF junkies that don't even know what Diaclone is! ;D

Now that I think of it, I do recall that long ago, I did have one solid colored type 2 driver that was gold instead of silver/chrome finish. I just can't recall which vehicle he came with.

Oh, ok, so in that case, the driver I had really was from the GRB. I probably forgot all about it as I recall finding him a mismatch and I thought that it was not right for the black guy to be too differentiated from the rest, much more since the blue guy was my designated leader!

Personally, I always felt safest leaving the base in the hands of the yellow driver. The blue guy is a bit dodgy...
