Hey guys,
It's been a long time since i've been on here... looks like things are still hopping along.
Anyways, i've been looking at these secret base toys and was wondering if anyone on here knows anything about them... Are they hard to get in north america?

Check this one out. They email in English, post international and I’ve made two or three purchases from them no problem. I seem to remember they do Secret Base stuff, but I haven’t checked recently and I’m not very knowledgeable about SB anyway. www.toyshop-rough.com

Secret Base Hmm, SECRET BASE.... That name rings a bell... Secret Base is the best little Toy Factory in Harajuku! Not really a POINT AND CLICK sorta shop. More like a lotta work. OH THE PAIN!!! SB items have been pretty slow to hit the USA. It doesn't help that the SB cyborg toys are just Vinyl Bits or HEADS, or INNER heads, or (inner brain heads to go inside the inner heads) The SB website link in the earlier posts does have some weekly updates, however a lot of odd variation items are never posted (they crank out A LOT of variations, but there is no on line checklist). Secret Base will not ship overseas and how to become an SB FAN CLUB member to purchase the special exclusives is pretty murky at best. Not so easy to get a heads up on the release dates for new items as all the information about Secret Base is usually buried in Japanese web forums. If you surf through them though, you can often find pix of upcoming prototypes. Sometimes these toys do make it to the USA in trades with Japanese dealers. A lot of the time US Dealers don't know what they even have or that it is CYBORG in nature. I just found out that Billy Galaxy recently acquired and sold a shonen cyborg "elequebird" head and had no idea what it was (sorry hypnotator!) There are Skull Brain heads, Robot Heads, Alien Heads, Bee, Plant & Devil Costumes (to name but a few items) Secret base is big on color and paint variation and there are new colors issued almost every toy show. The initial run sells fast at the toy show, but almost always directly to Japanese toy dealers, who put them up on Yahoo Japan, often before the day is out. There is always a dealer or two on Yahoo Japan who will list items at huge prices. Those costumes may sit for a year or more. Everything you see will go down in price if you just have patience. Usually LOOSE costumes will turn up for much less money a few months later. I have had discussions with Kimono My House and Heroes club and the consensus seems to be that there is not really a demand for this sort of thing. They don't want to end up having a huge inventory of cyborg stuff that they paid too much for. There is an Ebay seller named yellowspiral toys currently selling the occasional costume, as well as TOY TOKYO and Super7. Super 7 recently put out an article detailing Secret Base, but not really focusing on the cyborg items. That issue was ISSUE NUMBER 9. It does list some of the early costumes. Try contacting Brian at Super7 if you have a want list formulated. He might be able to help you. Otherwise, trying to collect SB toys will make you truly understand how much of a Gaijin you really are... Hopefully that helps a bit, Guy

Okay, I'll try not to strain your brain too much on all this. I will give you the basics and keep things simple. Here are examples of some of the costume types and heads that are in production: Secret base made some pretty interesting Gashapons as well: Secret Base did do a tribute to King Walder's Subforms by issuing their Skull Brain vinyl toy in Walder colors. This was also done for Astro Myu as well as a Skull Bee character in Cocobat colors. I believe the Vinyl figure you actually wondering about was the Sukerukun This BxH character has many variations and looks sort of like a mutated FrankenBerry monster. This particular incarnation has been altered to resemble the Dokuroking character. Sukerukun has been issued in several colors and is rather expensive compared to the secret base costumes. Secret base also produced Cyborg and Micronaut oriented t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies, but that's another story... Cheers, Guy

I wouldn't mind a transparent version of that cyclopean head.

WHoah - are those alternate heads (like the cyclops) included when you buy the little secret base packages on yahoojp, or are those different?

Two heads are better than one in the Japanese scheme of things! The Fans went nuts for inner heads after the first releases of the Beeman & the Eagleman sold the heads separetle in special offers. Now every comapny making cyborg costumes is doing the hidden inner head thing. The Toxic Phantom has not one, not two, but THREE heads, that fit together like a nesting doll.

Sure the packaging looks the same... Sure the product was made from the same mold... BUT. here is where it gets weird... Look on the Gargamel website. They are credited with creating one of the Secret base Bee costumes. Confused yet? Besides being EXTREMELY liberal with the whole copyright infringement thing, Japanese vinyl companies do more crossovers and team ups than random Marvel comics characters do with Spiderman. For example: Hasbro crossing over with Skynet to make Japanese characters like the FIST OF THE NORTH STAR on modern GI Joe body. Takara Crossing over with Gargamel to make a special microman alien. Takara crossing over with REDS (who made all the vinyl bits for their fighting vipers dolls. VxFxCx crossing over with Charactics to make a special 2 tone elequebird head, Secret Base Crossing over with Bounty Hunter to make certain colors of the Sukeru kun figures... Twim, Cure, medicom... they all have tons of these crossovers. NONE of these crossovers would ever happen in the USA. Cure is known for making the two Space alien Invader costumes. Cure did crossover versions of the Bee and the plant monster. Cure toys tend to be very sought after and are well worth it if you can find them. They do tend to go all out and go the extra mile with loads of accessories and such. Hope that helps, Guy

I checked back on the Gargamel website and I couldn't find any reference to the Bee costume. It used to be in the past items, but as I am clearly a Gaijin, and even though I am familiar with this toyline, I do not know the exact reason it was posted on Gargamel's website, with other Gargamel projects. Below is every photo that Gargamel previously had posted regarding this costume. For some reason the Innerhead shown is actually the head that went with the black clear Bee costume. I do not know why this head was used here. As for CURE, here is the Deluxe purple version of the Phantom 8 Man. From what I have seen, it appears to be one of the toughest modern outfits to obtain. If you ever see one, it is well worth picking up. Especially for the bonus bits for the space aliens suits. The painted cure alien heads are sold separately of course. (They wouldn't want to make it easy on the collector in any way... )

Cure has only done 2 SB costume crossovers (as seen here) and one set of Cure alien head variation colors sold exclusively at Secret base. When Vomit was released, I posted many photos of the ONE and only Toxic Phantom made by Cure. That is the VOMIT version. (The orange & yellow fella with the silver eye) All other versions of the Toxic Phantom were made by Secret Base. In Japan, they get everything presold ahead of time. It was all done and over within a weekend. Cure had teasers on their website for months leading up to the day of the sale. When you see a teaser ad for a preorder, etc. you just need to have someone such as Masato contact them and make the purchase. As things are now, you are going to be getting it on the secondary market (namely Yahoo Japan) and most likely can score a really decent deal if you get one without all the assorted goodies from the cereal box. Just remember to SAVE PHOTOS of the toys if you think they are cool or you might potentially want them later on down the road. The photos of the toys are just as elusive as the toys themselves as these small Japanese companies DO NOT ARCHIVE their photos, or keep online records. Secret Base actually advertised the vomit version of the figure on their own website, as well as on the cure website, as you can see below: Hope that helps, Guy

GUYx1: -which Cyborg/Walders are these SB costumes for? NEO HENSHIN, Cyborg 99 or the '72 edition? From what i understand, they're all different sizes. Can you use a Reissue Cyborg (like my lonely but lovely Ultraman reissue) on vintage suits? i would hate to mess a suit up. -what's up with the BIOMAN heads in the pics towards the top of the page? all i've seen are the TOXIC and BEE suits- love to get me some of those clear heads... was there an arm/chest set that went with it? ...also, any other robot-oriented suits? I have to get a Walder before i get any of these monsters. ...starting to get a real transparent toy fetish going on here, man. First, Microman, now HC... my pockets are crying in agony/sheer joy.

Guy, thanks for that.
What would be really cool would be a costume take on the micronaut aliens. I'm suprised they havent been done already.
