Man - when I was a kid I used to LOVE the shows G.I.Joe and transformers. I even bailed out of piano lessons to watch f**king transformers, cause it was at the same time.

When I was 15 I was in a hotel and transformers was on. Boy whas I excited... and boy was it ever a pile of mindless garbage! Don't ruin your childhood memories by watching that stuff again! I refuse to watch G.I.Joe - ever! Smurfs is also garbage. Man I used to love the smurfs. Boy do I wish I stuck with piano...

I did watch episodes of battle of the planets in my adult life and it wasn't too bad. The stories are really poorly written, but the animation and music is great. Made me want to acquire the gatchaman series on dvd which is quite awsome.

You're probably right, haggis... the memories are better than the actual shows. well, maybe the rubiks cube cartoon would be the exception where the memories are as sh*tty as the actual show.

I may be old but I'm too young to remember Wynegarde as Jason King. I always avoided that Flash Gordon movie, apart from catching five minutes when it was on TV and switching over. Hate Queen. Buster Crabbe is the only Flash for me. One of Guy's links has Lena Zavaroni, though. True culture.

OK. Take a step back.
I know I am going to totally detail the topic I STARTED, but
I’m quite dismayed that people are forgetting their B-movie heritage. What do you think inspired half of these toys.
A lot of films that are not all that watchable today.
I do not want to get into Revisionist History, but you know
there was Cinema Before the George Lucas mega budget.
This is all stuff along the lines of Herc & Xena and should not be taken seriously.


Ask yourself this:
Was there ever really a good decade for Fantasy/Sci-fi/Horror.
Sure there are a handful of hits, but aren't there a few people who saw the original British film X-TRO and thought it was at least MILDLY amusing that Alien forces would even consider creating an evil lifesize ACTION MAN?
Aliens in the George Lucas Universe would never have considered it!



Where would Mystery Science Theater (or even Austin Powers) be without the evil Donald Pleasance wearing hot pants in films like PUMA MAN.
It still gives me a shudder at the very thought.

FLASH GORDON was actually far superior to the the other B- movies of that period. Sure we all felt suckered into it after the films did not live up to expectations, but inretrospect, the casts were amazing!

The 80’s were just chok full of hundreds of lack luster Sci-fi Fantasy fare.
So much stuff coming out of Europe, many featuring some of the best British actors of the Genre.



Not to mention - Buster Crabbe’s Flash Gordon was seriously lacking in the Space Vixen Department.


Who can forget the 80’s Film STAR CRASH?

Oh yeah and there were ALSO lots of cool animated robots!

Okay, so this is probably will NOT be confused with the works of Isaac Asimov, but It has David Hasselhoff with a Light Sabre!

All I can say is that You may hate yourself in the morning, and they are all cheezy as hell, but is this not better entertainment than say Fantastic 4 or HIGHLANDER 3?
You could do A LOT worse...
I guess you just had to have been there...

Does anyone remember the Palitoy line CAMMANDER POWER?

That toyline also featured similar packaging & artwork to the Cyborg & Dr Who figures.

Yes I had Gor and my brother had Commander Power. Gor was quite cool, with the built in light that changed colour. Commander Power was just a guy in a fancy suit (SF toys often fell into the trap of the good guy being too boring). I wanted to want Shield, the third figure, but I remember taking him out of the box in the shop and finding him disappointing. The shield arm barely moved. He looked like Metal Man Roton and when you took his helmet off (wasn't I bold with this toy I wasn't buying?) he looked like a giant Micronaut.

I had a friend who was even more spoiled than me and had even more toys (a bit like this forum) and we swapped our Commander Power and Gor with him very soon after buying them, for his Cyborg and Muton figures. My Muton was getting a bit tatty and his neck was splitting, and my brother wanted to make an Invisible Man out of the Cyborg. He ended up breaking it trying to get it apart.

A couple of weeks later, I found a broken fragment of Gor's chest at my friend's house. "I only swapped them off you to smash them up," he said.

I forgot all about FLASH GORDON. that movie really wasn't as bad as you remember, its just Buster Crabbe is so dope.

You can't forget THE BLACK HOLE or TRON.

Hypno, I feel so horrible about your GOR! GOR was my favorite toy when I was a child. Captain Kirk and the Gor used to battle it out for many great adventures!
