Ehem... my advice to you is to NEVER make your purchase decisions based on what others think. What is junk for one person, may be a treasure for another. There is no better review of a figure (or anything) than the one you do yourself. }D

The only exception is if you wait for a couple reviews and they clearly show the toy is junk. Then it's more justified when you say no. :-)

I realize Daiku maryu came first,if it came after Gaiking..then the small Gaiking that came with the Diaku, wouldnt be such a problem for people.Bandai should have released them consecutively, not 22 toys apart.I love my GX-05R,but you have to have teh legs in a certain postion for the weight of the body. But worst? Not for me.Im surprised so many hate it,thos eof you that do,im curious do you also own GX-27 gaiking? I bough them in reverse order, mayeb that is why I like both entries.
Also 300$ is not that bad a price for Nanbara base. Its been that price forever, its worth it.GX-31V,it wasnt that expensive on release, just because it gets inflated, that is no reason to knock the toy, because its out of your price league.

Okay.
If the soc has more then couple of recurring bad reviews, I,m not going to gamble. If it is of character I love, I,ll just wait for inevitable better iteration down the road.
After looking at photos and reviews like that, There,re no way I,d be buying soc Jeeg...no amount of convincing, going to make me waste hard earned $90 on POS. I wouldn't,t want it for free. It'd be taking up valuable shelf space. And would hate to toss it as it will just take up landfill space. Be better off not produced in the first place.
I do take reviews from my RJ bros with thankful heart and view it with deserved respect. And if it,s clearly backed by photos and videos how crappy it is... Well then, the fate is sealed for me. If you like the character that much to choose to ignore all the obvious possible cons short of actually handling it yourself, then you most certainly bought it yesterday anyway. Most reviews would be just a light reading at that point.
But admittedly, there are many many times I view the RJ bros, glowing positive video review on a toy and I go "um sorry but that just doesn't look good" and actually turn me away from buying....

With all this in mind, as far as quality...engineering...price...and size are concerned, do you folks see any difference in SOCs TODAY compared to the very first SOC back in its day? The biggest difference I'm seeing in the SOC line is the size of each robot figure being made today... some are taller and/or bulkier than others. Where as the first and early SOCs now appear minimal by today's standards. This should be an easy question for those of you who've been collecting almost all of the SOCs in this line from the very beginning. zozo-mag

I find that later releases of SOCs pay more attention to stability issues than previous ones (especially regarding weak angles). While there are exceptions, I find fewer and fewer releases to have weak ankle joints, which was common in EVAs, Combattler V (GX-03), Voltes V, Ideon (to an extend, due to its real heavy weight)...etc. Baikanfu started having ratchet ankles (most awesome!). Even Godmars, Big O, Daltanius, God Sigma...etc. all heavy duty bots with pretty snug ankle joints without any issues of balance. Took them a while to pay attention to the ankles, but I am very glad they did eventually.

With all the big strides Bandai has made in this line, it is safe now to call the GX-01 "vintage" ? zozo-mag

Going with DMV's definition of a classic car, it has to be 20 years or older to fall in that category. The GX-01 was released in 1997, so it is 3 years short of being a classic/vintage. The one thing I see happening to the newer SOCs is their lack of diecast content. May be due to better engineering, but it still is a little disappointing when most of the Soul of Chogokin figure is made out of plastic. }D

That is absolutely true. At least in my case, I don't wait for any reviews when I like a figure. So far, I haven't done too bad. }D

I ain't knocking the toys, I'm knocking the price tags! That, plus the Nanbara Base was a web exclusive, meaning it had pitifully low production numbers to begin with. And I can't own GX-50 with good conscience knowing that damn thing is out there, beyond my reach. Argh!

I think a lot of the prices are inflated by what people see on eBay too. I mean if you track the price of a GX-50 Combattler or the GX-59 Daltanious, their prices appear to go up every 4-5 months on eBay. I don't know of anything collectable that really appreciates in value that fast, but on eBay it does, and all the sellers be it on eBay, Amazon, or some other sale site follow trend and raise their prices too. So I agree on knocking on the SOC prices as the go up super fast. I mean really, a new and not very rare GX-31V is near the price of a vintage Golion or Combattra? Or the GX-03 still going for about $108, and then the near duplicate GX-50 with added stuff going for near $400? Thats a huge price difference for a few weapon add ons and being able to form the battle tank. When I see the majority of current SOC prices, I think sellers are smoking crack. Thats been my turn off from buying them. Seeing a Daimos go for $150 one month, then 3 minths later up to $199, and then near a year later now up to $205+ not including shipping with many sellers selling them? Just kinda lame if you ask me.

Yeah, that's why I just keep checking Mandy as reasonably often as possible as their prices are much more, well, reasonable, compared to ebay.
The only thing ebay has going on for it in comparison is that those items will always remain available - albeit only because only a complete moron would buy them at those prices!

As long as there are morons who are willing to pay such outrageous prices for those items, the sellers on eBay will milk the opportunity to raise the price.
Offer the sharks a few more fish, and they'll take your arm. That's how I look at it.

Probably the one thing that slaps me about the SOC line is the interjection of non-robot characters such as Hello Kitty, the PM C3PO, and even Buzz Lightyear... Those should go in their own separate categories, leave the SOC line for super-robots and mecha.

But bro, those are not part of the Soul of Chogokin line. They are just chogokin. IMO, the ones that should've not been included in the SOC line are the Spaceships, King Joe(s), and most definitely General Franky. }D
