I've pretty much seen all the Anime series for the figures made into SOC's. It started with Transformers and Robotech, then Force Five came out and that really got me hooked on Japanese Anime. So pretty much since 1989 I have been watching Anime non-stop. Now I have started to collect all the Anime series that I watched as a kid, as long as it's in original Japanese ( Subs don't really matter to me since the storylines are pretty simple). But I do believe that your fondness for a figure becomes greater once you see your toy in action on the small screen.

Chen, if you have the time, can you compile a listing of Anime DVD's (that work for region 1) of all the super robots we all love here. I want to buy some overseas DVD's (I don't mind subtitles), but I want authentic ones. I don't know what stuff is fake and what are authentic. Also where do you buy yours. Thanks, ;D

The thing with having an "Official Release"is you have to wait for a North American distibutor, and so far only Shin Getter Robo and Mazinkaiser I think have been re-leased for North America. Your best bet is to get a Hong Kong bootleg since those are region free (Japanese ones are Region 2), but the down side is the subtitles aren't always the best since there translated from Japanes to Chinese to English. Plus some of the harder ones to find like Com-battler and Danguard Ace, seems like you can only find on VCD. VCD isn't too bad, but the quality is not DVD level, and you can pretty much count on no subtitles. Pretty much all my stuff is Hong Kong boots, with a few VCD sets of Gaiking and Getter Robo G, all of which I have gotten of Ebay. Right now there is a seller on Ebay who has alot of VCD sets of old Animes, I'm getting the Great Mazinger series from him, so once I find out the quality of the VCD's I'll see if I'll recommend him or not.

Thanks Chen! I have a few vcd's of Batman cartoons before they were released on DVD in the states. I don't mind the quality on animation, but on live action vcd's kinda stink. Thanks for the info, I'm gonna do some research on ebay now

I agree, ebay would be your best bet for now.

I'm 31 and I grew up pretty lucky in the fact that my dad traveled to Asia quite a bit for business (and for long periods of time) so our Christmas and birthday gifts were always robots of some sort. I remember one year that he was going be away during my birthday so he told me to expect something in the mail. On the actual day of my birthday, I received a package in the mail and it was Dairugger XV. I was so stoked and he's still sitting on the shelf above my computer as I type. Other original robots that we had were Leopaldon, VF1S 1/55 Valkyrie, Golion, Bioman, Juspion, and various Mazingers, Getters, etc plus the Shogun Warrior versions. Of course, the bulk of that collection is pretty much gone (except for my Joweone-modified Gai King of course, w00t!).
As for knowing who they were based off of TV/Movies, we watched Mazinger Z/Tranzor, Battle of the Planets, the Space Giants, Star Blazers, etc and tried to rent videos if they were available. The highlight was when the only kid in the neighborhood with HBO would call all of us over whenever GaiKing, Dangard, etc would be showing.
I would have to say that the most unfamiliar robot to me would be Zambot A since I've never seen *any* of it's associated anime.

I'm still surprised Bandai made a SOC out of him when Voltes lasted twice as long.

yes..sorry for hijaking the thread bill.
He GDom...I didn't think that the Eng dubs of Voltes and such were horrible...granted there's a bit of accents here and there but they did come accross quite close to the original japanese...save for the names in Voltes. my 2 cents

When I was a kid, I really didn't notice but now (watching these DVD/VCD versions off eBay) the accents and the unsynchronized lip movements are exactly what makes them a pain to watch. Its mainly the inconsistent accents as in some voice actors spoke almost without the accent, very clear and understandable, almost English (England) accent like, yet some just really horrible...some accents even sounded almost like "Ahnod" Schwarzenegger (sp?). Of course this can't be helped since accents are going to be different for every person (especially if English isn't their first language), but still it took away from the believability, for me, anyways.
I'm not making fun since I'm also Filipino myself (both my parents were born and raised in PI) so please don't take it the wrong way. I think its just that I've grown accustomed to watching my animes subbed. And even with the American dubs, I am very critical about lip synchronization, translation, etc. Believe it or not, I'll watch an English dub anime with the subtitles on just to make sure I didn't miss anything in the translation.

None taken G. Matter of fact...I tend to poke a bit of fun with the accents as we flips do amongst ourselves...like yourself, I prefer to watch them subbed or none at all..I'm trying to learn Japanese so, things are making sense to me little by little...

I only watch Anime in it's original Japanese state, even if I have to pay more for it. Plus after watching so much, you start to pick up the language and it starts getting easier to follow along.
