If I remember correctly the Popy DX had chains on the legs.

If I remember correctly the Popy DX had chains on the legs. Actually the Popy Chogokin(never DX) had missile launchers in the legs and swords out of the legs, not chains.

The chains were on the arms? The DX set had the ship and the planet and a bunch of other strange stuff,no? Correct, the DX had rings at the elbows with chains hanging off (just above the spring-loaded firing fists). The lower legs opened up a-la Robocop and had spring-loaded rocket-launchers that deploys (also there was room to store a couple swords). You wouldn't be able to see that hidden compartment when it was closed anyway so that doesn't really help in determining if this photo is a costume or a toy... Speaking of spring-loaded stuff, the chest also had a compartment that launched a couple of the "seated pilots." That weird ball was supposed to be a "monster generator" - the set came with a few soft PVC monsters for BFRobo to fight... (but they were too small, out of scale, and ultimately pretty useless).

I wonder if the katana is metal? Cool gimmick with the scabbard. Looks like it will sheath the blade.

Battle fever looks ready to rumble. Thanks Bizzio!
As for Voltes, I guess there will be a hole in his chest if he busts out the sword.

Voltes does come with two swords, one folding and one regular one. You could just keep the folding one in his chest and use the regular one.

I had really hoped they'd do something about that unweildy-looking "thigh-armour" - I never liked it, even as a kid I thought it was a little silly. And the shoulder pads too - they looked alright on the original DX toy. I think the SoC is meant to resemble the actual show costume because it's proportions (or maybe that's a trick of the camera in these latest photos) make it look really clumsy and "chunky."
