James Cameron for Mazinger Z? I think James Cameron for 999 myself.
Can't remember the dudes name but that Italian director that did Hellboy would be better for Mazinger Z.
Just my two cents

What do I feel? Come back to me in ten years - that's how long it took for a Cameron Spider-Man before it was turned over to Sam Raimi. That Mazinger movie will never be made as far as I'm concerned.
Transformers... come back in 5 years - seems Transformers popularity comes and goes every 5 years so I'll go with that. Dreamworks has a lot of punch because of who owns this machine - but I have my doubts.... At best, it'll be made, released, and then bomb in theatres and make a comeback on DVD. After 20 years, parents are still not "getting it." How will this new movie be any different than the original movie?
At the moment, I'm putting my money on the Evangelion film. It's a cult classic among practically all anime fans - and companies like Weta and ADV-films knows that: they won't market it out like a big-movie because it'll sell only to anime fans anyway, thereby saving a ton of money. I've seen concept sketches and that alone puts it into the league of "this might actually happen" which is more than I can say for the other two.
I'm harsh, yes, but realistic - I had been holding out for big-budget Marvel Comics movies since the late 80's... we're 15 years later before X-Men came out. Think about that...

I agree with what you said about Mazinger Z, but disagree with the rest.
Transformers is on the fast track, apparently they are happy with the script, Steven is locked as Producer, and very knowledgable of the source material (that part is weird). They will be announcing the director shortly.
It will be different because the first film was animated. This is a live action production of Generation 1 Transformers. It may bomb once it is out, but you will see it by 2007, look it up.
Evangelion (if it gets made) is not going to be a tiny art house cult movie. The film would cost so much to make it would be suicide to market it as such. The concept art for the film is all over the net, take a look, the scale of a movie like this is huge. It will probably be a trilogy because of the size of the story.
Cameron is on Battle Angel now, and using some kind of new technology to film it, hopefully Mazinger will be his second anime adaptation.

Out of all the movies mentioned, I have the highest confidence in the Neon Genesis movie. Weta has proven that they will take the time to get the details right.

Just my two cents Alex in Seoul i think you mean Del Toro. He also did Blade 2 and Devil's backbone I think he would be a good choice too. Although I'm curious about Mazinger Z... to see what it might look like.. but if hollywood does it like Godzilla.. I'll be ready to poke out my eyes!~ Hmmm

I've also seen the sketches for EVA in Newtype and REALLY shudder at what is going to happen. I mean, I love Evangelion... BUT.... still, I have been surprised before.
AS to Mazinger... this could prove interesting.

If they stay true to the anime there shouldn't be any issues.
I hope they stay true... please, please, please....

I think Weta may improve it not damage it.
Remove manditory anime cute (keep the penquin). Remove teen soap opera. Remove subplot filler. Remove re-use of frames cheats. Remove awful awful awful music.
What's left is an incredible work of science fiction.
BTW: I do not blame Gainax for these traits, for it is the standard anime practice, and keeps the attention of Japanese people. I love anime for squeezing giant robots from her pink happy womb.

well I remember a while back ago they had some production art done for Weta of the Eva's.. and if they stick to that.. that Eva movie is going to rock... So look wise, I'm not worried. I just hope the spirit of Eva is present in the script.

"AWFUL MUSIC? Man I LOVE the Evangelion CD's (I have like 4 of them).. I often listen to them when I goto bed"
Yes AWFUL. Opening music just makes most folk's head swell. Otaku love that stuff, and buy J-pop, anime soundtracks, video game soundtracks, etc. I confess the "angel attack" music has it's moments but it is a loop and goes nowhere. I could go on and write about that ass of a song played at the end, thanatos, and how much of a buzz kill it was, but instead I will say this.
Anime gives us the most compelling stories, and characters. Pushes the limits of conceptual design. BUT non otaku HATE the music. I hope the film would recieve a dramatic score the likes of John Williams.

Does anyone have a link to the concept art for the EVA movie? As much as I would love to see a movie of NGE, I think the story would need major revision to make a satisfactory film. Those of us who watch anime have to become comfortable with unresolved conflicts, huge gaps of logic, and wildly improbable scenarios. ( By what means, praytell do the good folks at Sele intend to implement the human instrumentality project? Is there a big dissolver ray that's supposed to cause all the souls to leave their bodies and fuse? And how exactly are the Angels and Evangelions supposed to be connected to this ridiculous scheme?) Don't get me wrong. I'm a huge fan of NGE. It's a brilliant, but flawed piece, and I like it warts and all. But the bar for willing suspension of disbelief is much higher in a live action film. I'd hate to see my favorite anime become a cult film laugh riot. JWM

I don't know about all these. The Weta concept art for the Evangelion mech & environment is cool, but the few sketches of Rei & Asuka (or just the plug suit design on full grown adult) made me shuddered. No doubt that Weta can make a cool Sci-Fi look out of it, with high production value. But having all the characters being adults and most likely non-Asian, it may make the film feels very different. Some anime stuff (look & proportion) just doesn't work when applies to live action, so it would be interesting to see how they can pull off the human drama part nicely without look awkward.
In terms of Eva music, I like them too. Some good, some bad, but pretty good stuff overall. I don't think its about being otaku or not. Just that whether you have appreciation of these Japanese music. ;D

I think that for the most part the NGE music is good. Sure it could be better. I love the Giant Robo music the most.
I'm not sure that Transformers will hold it's on in the theater, but if adults like us take their kids then it will do just fine. The fan base is huge and spans generations. I bought the movie a long time ago and now my son and daughter are hooked on them. If for no other reason......this film will appeal to families and will make a good deal of money even if only for the opening weekend.
NGE---I mean what really can you say? It tied super science, religion, human struggles/conflict and psychology into a sorted masterpiece. I know that the story cannot be told in one movie which if it does great will warrant two more. I think that they definitely chose the right studio........Look at the magic they worked with the Hobbit.........I mean come on........It's the Hobbit...I believe that the movie will be made. ADV's pockets have become quite deep. It has to be able to appeal to a broader base but we die hards will to see it anyway. I pray that really engages people that normally would not see anime otherwise. Blockbuster or not....I will see at least twice.
Mazinger Z----This I have to see.

( By what means, praytell do the good folks at Sele intend to implement the human instrumentality project? Is there a big dissolver ray that's supposed to cause all the souls to leave their bodies and fuse? And how exactly are the Angels and Evangelions supposed to be connected to this ridiculous scheme?) JWM Seel's plan was to force the incompleted evolution of humanity. This is refered to as "ilumination" by most magick systems and occult literature. The birth of our world was the 1st impact but the process was haulted. Adam (the being that looks like an Eva made of pure energy) was rejected by Lilith (the thing on the cross) This lead to the flawed creatures that we became. Seel by creating the 3rd impact was intending to recreate this process in hopes of getting it right. Ironically the faux Adam (Eva1) that was cloned from the original could only be piloted by Shinji who is (again irony) the compounded icon of all that is human flaw. Lilith's part was controlled by Rei, who would not Reject Adam this time out because of whom she was created from, Shinji's mother. Alas the plan was thwarted due to Adam's choice. He chose Eve, who is flawed like Shinji, namely Asuka. Leaving Shinji and Asuka not in The Garden Eden, but on a dead world littered with chunks of dead giants thrown about. Eva was not intended to be simple. It's mystery is best investigated by looking up every strange word that is mentioned. I had a blast watching it, and learned alot more about the occult, Kabala, hebrew folklore, Angelic hiarchy, and apocalyptic literature. ABSOLUTE TERROR FIELD=WILL TO POWER I don't think I will be that destroyed if Shinji, is Seth or something, and they have no intention of changing the ages of the children. Harry Potter has locked that in real good. Alot of people like anime music. I prefer Black Metal myself Transformers: The moment I see an 18 wheeler Semi Truck transform into Prime, and it looks real, I think I will make a great big happy poo in my theater seat. I wish they could get the original voice actor! That guy ruled! Guy had authority........
