Hi,
Well, Toysee has been doing a lot of business of late so much so that I've seen something, contemplated purchasing it then come back a day later only to find it's been sold and it was the only one they had. I really hate that but here's a list of whats hot with Korean collectors and why.
###1. Taekwon V. Yep, anything Taekwon V seems to be snapped up regardless of if it is from the original or version2 or even the recent 3rd version. It's as big in Korea as Atom is in Japan though it has a very male following.
It's also popular because it was one of the first mega popular Korean cartoons made- The music was cheesy and the imagery mirrored Grandizer Mazinger to a large extent.
Korea has it's own animation museum now and the Kor Govt recently targetted animation as the second biggest growth industry after semi-con/flash memory chips so it gets a lot of media coverage. There are animation studios dotted seemingly all over Seoul making crap to excellent product ( `Wonderful Days' the movie is an example of excellent product).
Right now there is a history of animation airing on Tooniverse at 2am weekends- Last night they had the producer of Lazenca talking about his boyhood influences etc and then they were talking/reviewing the singers that recorded those dreadful TaekwonV etc etc albums.
Anyway, if Toysee could get more Taekwon V it would sell within a few days of being listed.
###2 Gatchaman (aka Five Eagle Brothers). Yep, it's being shown on MTV now and interestingly Koreans have more interest in the older 1972 or 1977 series than the later ones where the phoenix was blue instead of white; Also in the earlier series the HQ was above ground before sinking then being rebuilt undersea and having that additional gay robot ( 7 Zark 7 ).
Toysee sold 4 or 5 of the big (40x42cm) 5 member action figure boxes this week alone and the reason I suspect is because some shops around town have those packs priced at 60000+ whilst Toysee had them at 20000 each. You can see one maybe on page in the action figure section at the bottom of page 10.
Whilst Toysee doesnt have them there are model kit bootlegs of Five Eagle brothers from the late 1970s which are very rare in Korea as there wasnt much of an industry here and they are very desirable to the few Korean collectors there are.
If Toysee has battle of the planets items they rarely sit there for more than a month.
####Hyundae Tong Sang Atoms. They were made so badly that they are wanted by collectors from everywhere it seems. Hyundae Tong Sang dissapeared in the Asian financial meltdown but they left a great legacy as the items that werent forcibly destroyed by the Govt have a kitsch factor of 100%+.
Often missmatched colors from different production runs means UGLY and laughable. You can see an example of a smaller sized one (Hyundae Tong Sang made 3 or 4 sizes of Atom all illegal of course) which came with a video of Atom ( page 6 of the action figure page).
Now my tip for a good buy is the diecast Acropunch on the bottom of page 10 on the robot page.
Well, good luck with your hunting and shopping to all.
