I've been selling/buying chogokin for the past year. After going to the Tokyo Toy Festival in March 07', I saw these unusual vinyl toys and others in local shops in Akihabara. I have no clue when it comes to collecting, and pricing seems sporadic. But certain ones, seem to make great art pieces for display. Anyone have any suggestions on where to start? Websites that have some information on this hobby? I found some interesting ones at: www.marmit.co.jp/marmit_ivtbck.htmI had the chance to purchase these, but was hesitant because I didn't know anything about the hobby. Now I think I should of purchased them.

When it comes to vinyls, just buy what appeals to you. You don't need a guide to follow. There are so many representations of Godzilla & Friends, one can get lost trying to be a completist (there's so much overlapping by different manufacturers as well), so it really depends on how deep you want to get. As for me, I pretty much buy the characters that I like, from my favorite shows (because I've been a fan of this stuff my whole life) -- I like Bullmarks and Bullmark repros, and vinyls from other companies who have filled in the gaps, like M-Ichigo -- since I actually bought Bullmarks in San Francisco as a kid. So, it's a combination of nostalgia and wish fulfillment (getting the figures I couldn't back in the day).
I guess you should just feel the vinyls flowing through you... and go with your heart. ;D

I really dig the coloration (is that a word?) on that Godzilla. Depending on price, I'd be kicking myself too!

Like August said, buy the stuff that appeals to you....you won't regret getting into vinyls. Yes, alot of the vintage Bullmark stuff can be pricy (especailly th Kaiju) but there are a bucket load of manufacturers around and a lot of vinyl figures are pretty cheap in price....and the colors/designs are FANTASTIC. ;D

Why those figures are so expensive?

Why those figures are so expensive? Good question. I would think it has something to do with the print run. Unfortunately, I've looked on ebay and it doesn't seem to have a good re-sale price. But I think that's largely because there isn't a huge collector base in the US as compared to Gokin?

Good question. I would think it has something to do with the print run. That is the reason. These toys are made in limited supply, specifically for collectors of vinyl. Unfortunately, I've looked on ebay and it doesn't seem to have a good re-sale price. This depends on the piece. Some vinyls are not well accepted in the community. Sometimes the sculpt does not appeal to the collectors, or the color doesn't fly well. But I think that's largely because there isn't a huge collector base in the US as compared to Gokin? Actually, I would have to disagree and say that there are probably more folks collecting vinyl than gokin. The urban vinyl crowd has bled over to the kaiju collecting dudes and it has pretty much exploded. A large portion of my collection is vinyl. If you are into Godzilla and Ultraman, most of what you collect is probably vinyl. The robots are far outnumbered by characters that lend themselves to vinyl toys (Sentai, kaiju, Tokusatsu, etc). So I say, embrace the vinyl part of your soul. Expand your horizons and take the next step into the madness of collecting chunky, colorful blobs of molded petroleum products. ;D

Good points Sketcher. While I'm not necessarily a kaiju or vinyl collector I will get something if it strikes my fancy,or if the character isnt available in gokin. For instance I would have went for this but I didnt know the value or anything about it,anybody??I have some large size vinyl Murakami's that I like like the "DOB's"They should increase in value.
