Well recently me and my wife found a Japanese shopping distrcit called Mitsuwa Market place www.mitsuwa.com/english/index.html out here in NJ though it is a bit of a drive for me (over an hour drive from my home) i was excited to find a completely japanese distrcit. Usually you only hear of chinatown or korean town (no offense to anyone) but never Japanese. And yes everyone spoke japanese so really great expierence for me and my wife who are very much into the culture. They have traditional japanese food and menus (not just that hibachi crap but real ramen shops and such) they have a bookstore selling all of our favorite mask for pretty much what you would pay regularly - shipping lol and a little discount card club thing. Furthermore, they do subscriptions but I have yet to look into that! As excited as i was to eat some real ramen dishes and the atmosphere (almost like you had a slice of Japan itslef) I found that you must be pretty well off to enjoy anything else the distrcit had to offer! The supper market is uber expensive OJ is $6 lettuce was almost $2 a lb! Not sure if they operated on the yen to dollar market but damn!
So ok they have all these shops so they had to have a toy store right?? The good news is yes, the bad news is that they have a worse mark up then my local comicbook and hobby shop. Here is a comparrison my hobby shop sells MG Wing zero for $60 which is prety high when you can get it for around 40-30 online, but they sold it for 104!!! 1/144 were around 40 and SD gundam about 25 but the coupe de grace PG Wing pearl addittion $600!! Which they had so many markings specifing that it was a great deal!! I looked at the attendant standing next to it, he was like its soo expesnive because they dont make it in the US........ i was like duhh but that price is friggin retarded espeically when you can find it online for less then half that! I wouldnt doubt that it was the only one instock but i didnt bother asking (oh and PG strike rouge was almost $300). They had an awesome case of various built models and pvc gundam figures as well other various figures. I guess i should of known when i saw a rather nice T-shirt with some knaji on it going for $65!!!!!!! they also had many other items in the store non toy related like furniture, kitchenware, and other various nicknacks for equally outrageous prices!
So not sure if this would be a good find for the folks in cali but they have other locations for those that live outside of cali. Go there for the atmosphere, the food (cooked food good price), and hobby and video game magazines, Manga too but most of what they carried were in complete japanese (duhh!) Unless you got it like that, that is!
