Here's a mini-review of the Target exclusive "Combiners Class" Superion box set comprised of Silverbolt, Airazor, Air Raid, Fireflight, and Skydive.
Yup, it's a re-release set. It's quite nice to have another crack at it though, and it's nice to have all the components in one box. I like the individual jets and relatively simple transformations. Of course, the big bonus is the ability to combine the 5 into Superion. This is also a lot of fun. Some of the joints are ratcheted Superion can handle a few rather limited poses. I like to use Fireflight and Skydive (the A-10 Warthogs) for the legs and Airazor and Air Raid for the arms. Silverbolt is the largest and most interesting one because he houses the cleverly hidden head of Superion and has a slightly more complicated transformation. The paint apps could have been better and the weapon attachments could stay on better in Superion mode, but these are minor quibbles for an otherwise great release.
PROS:
-It's another chance to get the whole set of 5 jets relatively cheaply
-Each bot is decent as is each alt mode (each jet has fully retractable landing gear!)
-They combine!
-Superion is nice and large, but not as big as Leader class Optimus
CONS:
-QC could have been better--some paint app problems like overspray, underspray, splotches
-OK, Superion is not the most poseable Transformer
-Airazor and Air Raid are exactly the same except for coloration and each has plenty of kibble in alt form
-Skydive and Fireflight are exactly the same except for coloration
-it's a re-release so nothing's really new here; Superion is NOT featured in Transformers 2 ( ROTF)
-The clear weapon attachments tend to not stay on very securely in Superion mode
OVERALL:
A worthy purchase for well under $30 on sale. Heck it's a complete set for cheap.
