That looks sweet! Is that Derek Wildstar taking up the captains role for the deceased cptain avatar? did you ever see that other series they made... I think it was called Yamato 2520? I have a couple episodes on tape. It wasn't to bad IMO but I guess it wasn't that well liked. I like anything that expands the Space Battleship Yamato / Star blazers universe. Any show that has a theme that sounds cool in Japanese and English rocks!I dont know if all the lyrics are the same but still that's cool.

This looks so awesome! Is Leiji Matsumoto involved in this one too? His character designs look a bit softened compared to say Cosmo Warrior Zero and Queen Emeraldas. *Throws in copy of Queen Emeraldas DVD*

His character designs look a bit softened compared to say Cosmo Warrior Zero and Queen Emeraldas. *Throws in copy of Queen Emeraldas DVD* This film is from original Yamato creator, Yoshinobu Nishizaki. He & Leiji Matsumoto had a very public court battle over the rights to Yamato a few years back, so Matsumoto is not involved in any way. Very sad. I would have much rather preferred the 2 of them working together, doing a yamato film in the updated "Matsumoto-style" seen in the Yamato Playstation games. Even though Nishizaki was the actual creator, it's just not Yamato without Matsumoto's visual brilliance. Of course, I'm quite biased. Haha.

Here's a cut scene from one of the Yamato Playstation games from a few years back. This was done by Matsumoto's Studio DNA (when he held the rights to Yamato,) and imho the character designs and ships look light years better than Nishizaki's new movie.

you know I kind of like cg work done for that game. I really don't like the cel shading for the movie

Some even better Yamato cg taken from the pachinko game:
again, makes the new movie look a bit underwhelming. while i'm not too keen on the animation style for the new film without Matsumoto, it's good to have a new yamato project to renew interest in this venerable franchise.

This cg is cool. But I like the new anime better. I just enjoy hand drawn animation better for this franchise.

This cg is cool. But I like the new anime better. I just enjoy hand drawn animation better for this franchise. I agree that for a feature length film for yamato, it needs to be 2D animation and not CG. However, I'm just not sold on the "non-Matsumoto" version of these characters for this new film. For me, Kodai/Wildstar should look like that Playstation cut-scene animation, and not what I saw from the trailer. Personal preference aside, if the film brings the franchise back to the forefront, that's all that matters. Hope it does well.

So, has the new anime version already been released in December 2009? I'd like to see it. But, I also would probably prefer to see this new live-action version as well... ...This is too cool to miss. zozo-Magengar

I need to see both. I know that sounds fan-boyish, but its true: I have never watched Yamato before (nor did I grow up with Starblazers). It's the one remaining major classic that I have lived without and have come to the conclusion that I simply do not have the drive to hunt down the vintage series...

I just did all the work for you - no need to "hunt" Just click the links and buy them. These are the Chinese KO's of the Japanese remastered series at a FRACTION of the price of the originals, and they have English subtitles which the Japan release did not (they’re not the best subs, but you’ll get the idea.) While I LOVE Star Blazers and it's in my top favorite series’ of all time, if you're coming in as an adult some of the editing of the US version my reduce the experience - so this would be my recommended introduction to the series. That said, if you want English then Star Blazers was the least ba$t*rdized of ANY 80’s anime series and is MORE than watchable. Nothing of substance was removed other than some violence and the overall story structure was brought over intact. That said – this version is DIRT CHEAP. See I did all the work for you!

But, I also would probably prefer to see this new live-action version as well... ...This is too cool to miss. zozo-Magengar I believe the new anime film is currently still in theaters in Japan. As for the live action version that won't hit theaters in Japan until Dec. 2010. So, that means a pretty long wait for us English speaking fans. I need to see both. I know that sounds fan-boyish, but its true: I have never watched Yamato before (nor did I grow up with Starblazers). It's the one remaining major classic that I have lived without and have come to the conclusion that I simply do not have the drive to hunt down the vintage series... Holy cow, Ben, you gotta watch Yamato/Star Blazers! Especially since you're a Macross fan (Macross owes quite a bit to Yamato.) Corellianvette is absolutely right, although if you've never watched the series I understand why you might be weary of buying the dvd's outright (totally worth it though.) Just to start you up, a group called Village Video Anime have taken the clean Japanese dvd releases and added the English Star Blazers dub. Torrents of those can be found pretty easily, and I think they're on youtube as well. Star Blazers series dvd's can also be found on Netflix, and the theartrical films are also on Netflix under Space Battleship Yamato (English subtitled only.) Unfortunately, all the US dvd releases are in dire need of audio & video remastering, which is why some prefer the HK bootlegs. I prefer the Star Blazers version, because I grew up with it, and I had to have the English voice cast, which was way ahead of its time in terms of quality during the late 70's/early 80's. The show does hold up extremely well even 30+ yrs. later, so even if you don't have the nostalgia factor, the adult level of storytelling will keep your interest. As for Star Blazers/Yamato fans in general, I also recommend tracking down Space Battleship Yamato: The Making of an Anime Legend. It's a one of a kind English language documentary that tells the history and impact of the series in Japan. It's narrated by the original voice of Wildstar, and is amazing in its detail.

Ben, you've been Blessed! Corellianvette just gave you the "Oprah Winfrey's HARPO HOOKUP" of the decade! ;D You will love Starblazers/Spacecruiser Yamato... I watched it on tv here in the US during my highschool years ('78-80). It is one of The BEST "space-operas" in anime, and I'll bet it gave inspiration to the creation of other fan-favorites such as "Robotech" and "Macross". This series is like a "Star Wars" Harlequinn novel: once you start watching it from the beginning, you'll wanna follow the plot to the very end. (edit)... if you enjoy animes like Robotech, Macross, Gundam, and others of that same 'space-opera' genre-- ---then you should add Starblazers (Spacecruiser Yamato) to your collection. Get both the English version, and the original Japanese version, so's you can enjoy the best of both! zozo-Magengar
