Ok I have a bit of a problem on my hands. I recently moved to MD (well partly as I am currently commuting between NJ and MD at the moment). and in the process of moving my collection to my New home In MD. I pretty much display my figures outside of the box but I kept every single box for every figure. I have well over 500 figures in my collection and that equals a ton of empty boxes.
So how important is it to keep the boxes? I really dont use them to store extra parts or anything as I keep them in baggies in bins so really the only purpose I can see for keeping them is for resale. I know there are a lot of people out there that want the figures in their orginal packing. But, I am not selling my entire collection so do I really need to keep them or not. Also, I guess I am getting lazy and trying to justify moving and storing 500+ boxes lol.
Id like some input from my trusted RJ guys as well as some of your own personal habits.
Now do I throw them out or keep them

Since you are moving, wouldn't it make more sense to repack the figures back into their boxes? The boxes are only important if you plan on reselling any of them. Boxes are also good to store unused accessories. Still have a lot of SOC that has unused accessories. Would save space if I store them in plastic bags, but risk the chance of losing them and not knowing what it is.

Sometimes is good to keep the boxes for 3 reason:
1) You can use the boxes to store the figures safely while moving to a new place. 2) Possible selling the figure in the future. 3) when your collection gets to crowded you can store them away to make some space.
i keep my boxes just if in one point or another because of a reason i have to sell my figures then at least i can give it to the buyer with the box as well. Now boxes i don't keep are the model kits since they will just be a small figure in a big box ( example Gundams) I sometimes store 2 or 3 on the same box. I would say keep the boxes if there really necessary for you, but if you don't have any plans to sell the figures then throw them away or throw way the boxes of certain figures that you wouldn't sell and keep the ones that you might give away.

Hi MMJ Box
with that large a collection , I think its easier to box it up . theres that chance that something gets lost , mis identified, or mixed with something else.
I agree that storing empty boxes is a pain in the neck but losing a sword , gun , or any small part that you need for a figure sux.
Most of my collection was in large plastic totes but that made for heavy lifting. Everything I have now goes into a copy paper box 18" x 12" x 10 " That takes care of SOC (most), SRC, Revoltechs , SH Figuarts, Figma , and Hi-Metal. Its easier to carry and consumes less space. If I ever have water I'm in trouble but . I can always stick these inside Totes if I have to at some point. LOL

Here's my choice (my current situation since I had to give up my storage unit). I just feel bad for my kids. Its a tough choice, but to me boxes are essential. I'm considering the garage, but so much gets moldy in rainy, humid South Florida, that it would be the same as throwing them out.

The boxes are one thing, but you need to talk to your wife about the vacuum cleaner man!

My boxes stay in my closets solely to be there for when I move out of my apartment and I can have something to transport my toys in. If I knew I was in a place I was going to stay in I'd toss 'em out.

I say if you have the space in your new place, don't be lazy and keep them. While you may not resell at the moment, you never know down the line.

The boxes are one thing, but you need to talk to your wife about the vacuum cleaner man! HA! Yeah, and that crappy old one makes it look like I'm really poor. Well, maybe I am, but maybe its because my wife HAD TO HAVE a Dyson, which we mostly keep downstairs. This is just a little one we use to clean up the cat litter upstairs. I don't mind it being in there. I've got tons of non-bot stuff in there, unfortunately (kids' presents, etc.), so I'm just used to it. Our house is so overcrowded, its not even funny.

kingboy.....i love your closet.
As for you, mechamaster, I'm not sure what kind of toys you collect, but if I were you, I'd throw out boxes most plastic toys and keep the boxes for the higher end items.
For models, I'd flatten out the boxes, keep the completed models, instructions, and accessories in zip locks and put those in a bigger boxes that would fit. Throw away the part of the box where nothing is printed on.
Keep anything with styrofoam!

I keep the box to everything myself especially the high end stuff, but also for newer mass produced stuff because Ive noticed that packaging develops a certain charm over time. For example I bought some action figures in the early 90's that had what I thought were forgettable packaging. Some I threw out some I didnt even get around to opening and now they seem really cool to me and I'm glad I didnt toss em. The designs of that toy's era is what makes it fun to hold onto the packaging which is great as long as you have the space for it. Its like blasts from the past. As insignificant as they may seem when they are new, they may develop that certain charm 10 years or more from now. At least for me, thats why I keep em

Thanks for your opinions but how come some of you said you would throw them out but no one voted for that option?
I must say a lot of the reason I question the boxes is because of laziness. The empty boxes are stored in my attic. I did consider repacking my collection in their original packing but you see my collection is in the basement and three floor ups (plus a ladder that doesn't quite reach to where I need it) kept me from doing that and the fact that the boxes are stored in bigger boxes that I didn't bother marking so a pain to match this with that. I just packed all my loose figures in bubble wrap baggies (wonderful things they are) as I have an almost limitless supply of them at my job. Sure the totes are a little hefty but pretty much everything is secure.
I know I could keep them for reselling but hell I hate looking for the boxes (due to them being in the attic). So i pretty much sell what I sell out of box (im not really trying to make a profit or make back what I paid just make some funds to keep my addiction going). So I dont care if i cant get top dollar for my goods. I will go out of my way if the person really really wants the box though (ahem ancer ahem) lol.
As it is now all my primary collection (except for un-built models which are of course in box) are already at my home in MD in said totes. so do i really need the boxes?? I do have room for them but not like I used to, take this into consideration that I am still collecting so even more boxes!!
Nice closet by the way, currently my laundry room is in similar fashion lol........

I voted for you to keep them! ;D As for you throwing away the boxes, would you throw out or have you already thrown out this box from your collection? www.gundamvault.com/GundamCollection/Voltron/Pictures/masterpiecevoltron1.jpgFor me, one thing Toynami has over the competition is their Book Packaging from their MasterPiece Line. This is one of the best packaging ideas to date for looks and stability..... ~B

My vote went to throwing them out, but what I actually do is recycle them. In my situation I don't really even have space for all my figures, let alone their packaging. I do make occasional exceptions for a handful of especially beautiful boxes or those for really fragile things, though. That said, I don't collect to resell or have any real concern for value. I take good care of my things, but how much I can spin them for later doesn't factor into the equation. For someone with more turnover in their collection, keeping boxes probably makes more sense. BTW, someone mentioned difficulty keeping track of which parts go with which figure after ditching the boxes for ziplocks - labeling those bags with a sharpie or something goes a long way towards not forgetting

With a number of members here at RJ who do like/love/need boxes and their inserts, wouldn't be a good Idea to offer it to other members?
I am sure they would pay a decent price for it and of course handle the shipping cost for it, especially since you might just throw it away. I know I could use some TF G1 boxes or old Popy Boxes... Just a suggestion though ;D... ~B

Yeah I heard of people selling boxes....... i could do that but that would mean Id have to take my boxes to MD with me any way which is what I am trying to avoid but maybe I will. I was just so amazed at how many boxes I had collected over the years.... it just feel like moving dead weight..
honestly when I buy figures from other RJ members (and elsewhere) I dont care for the box. I just want it to be in good shape and not missing any major parts.
